I’d say you need Bulk Rename Utility, it’s a freebie. A bit of a learning curve but even if you just use it to add the date to the photo name it makes it much better than P009876.

Personally I always start the name with the date in reverse so today would be 240811 followed by a three digit number then all the photos appear in order.

Personally I would then put the city or place name followed by more detail but that is up to you of course.

Those photos were taken on the 4th May 2024 at a town called Kimba. The number reflects the order in which they were taken (from the time stamp).

Get it here:

Just a suggestion but it makes life so much easier.

Thank you for the suggestion Bruce it is appreciated. Doing over 700 stills on the last trip is a bit of a daunting task. and the thousands of other previous photos as well makes it impossible. then there are all the videos over the past 12 years as well.
If I want to know a date and time a photo was taken I use KUSO exif viewer which gives me any information I need except for the place.

It will take time if you want to go back and do all your photos but starting from now is a good beginning, the longer you put it off the harder it gets. BRU uses the exif data to provide the date for the file (it doesn’t care if it is a .docx file, a jpg file, a .xlsm or a .mov file) but surely it is easier if at least the date is in the file name?

The good old abandoned Google Picasa also uses the exif info to put photos into a dated folder which is also convenient but you can sort by created date in Windows Explorer and use that to create dated folders.

This is my BRU set up for renaming photos straight out of the camera

It does things in the order number for each section so the results are predictable too. For example anything I add as a title in section 7 (Add) automatically ends up after the date (section 8) - “Auto Date” and the number (section 9 - “Numbering”). The red heading indicates an active section each can be reset individually and you don’t have to reenter the set up it can all be saved as a .bru file. I have different ones for different cameras - for renaming torrent files for example - I don’t know how people get on without it.

If I want to add more to titles then I press reset which clears everything then Add in section 7 a suffix for more info for selected files. It makes life so easy.

It also has a scripting language (RegEx) but that is better left until you are more familiar with it

Bruce I think we are going of topic amd away from the heading

Just a side discussion - just stick up more photos from the 500 with better titles :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Problem solved

our tour guide after a very long day (very loud snooring)

he had the micky take out of him, the coach driver said he thought the coach had got engine trouble when he woke up, and me being me mentioned a girlfriend he kept on about, which he doesn’t have. Even the driver backed me up . Of course it made all passangers have a good laugh
