Nextdoor uk seems genuine but have doubts

Has anyone else had letter posted to them inviting them to join local group?

It’s not from the local Jehovah’s is it?

Yes, Cinders. It came today.
I haven’t opened all my mail yet, but it says on the envelope it is about joinging the local ‘Next door.’

I vaguely remember looking at this a good while back, when another local thingy closed down, but at the time I thought they wanted to know too many questions, so didnt bother.
Will have another look at this one in a mo.

It asks you to enter a code within seven days when it expires.

Yes I’ve had a hand posted invitation a couple of times in the last few years.
I used to belong to a lovely neighbourhood site, blessed if I can recall the name now, but it was taken over by a much larger site where you had to give your actual address.
No way!

If you Google nextdooruk you’ll see a screed of links where you get the distinct impression it’s got itself a bad reputation.
But I confess I haven’t looked into it in any depth.
As far as I can make out it’s American

Many thanks ruthio.

Might be Percy_Vere. :grinning:

I am a member of mine. It is how I got into the coffee group meets.

I just wouldn’t but that’s me.

Yes I joined a couple of years ago Cinders, I only follow the newsfeed about various things that happen in my neighbourhood. Sometimes it’s about crime, people getting stuff stolen or dubious characters hanging about, but sometimes it’s about local meetups of various clubs (litter pickers or walking groups) We also keep an eye on the council if they are not doing their job properly. I’ve not had any problems so far.

I’ve just remembered the neighbourhood site I used to enjoy, it was called Streetlife.
I googled it and it directed me to Wikipedia, where this snippet is taken from …

"By 2015, Streetlife claimed to have a million member,s[5] doubling its size over the first six months of the year, and covering 4,000 communities across the UK.[6]

In February 2017, Streetlife was purchased by US firm Nextdoor.[7] Streetlife sent an email to its members recommending they transfer to Nextdoor. It announced Streetlife would be closed at the end of the month.[8] However, Nextdoor’s different privacy policy has provoked anger and serious safety concerns amongst some former Streetlife users.[8][9]"

It sounds to me as though it varies very much from one area to another

Yes I’ve belonged to my local Nextdoor for years and it’s very helpful for tradesmen who are recommended , lost cats dogs etc.

I have only part of my name as I do on here . You do have to give address but it is hidden from public and not accessible. I like it . I have my own personal discussion group on there with 101 members

I dont think its unsafe to be honest

I think you just have to be especially careful not to give out any personal information on this type of site

Its not something I would use, to be honest. But for my local area there is a facebook page (which is open to all, even those with no accounts). Its mostly community events, and lost pets, to be honest, but its updated frequently. I would be wary of sites that require you to input personal info.

I’m a member of Next Door UK - I was a bit dubious when I first received an invitation to join but I decided to give it a try, without giving any personal details or traceable information.
I have found most of the members are genuine residents in my village and nearby town. Between us all, we have helped to re-unite quite a few lost pets with their owners, help out a few residents to solve problems and provide information - and I have had a few useful recommendations for local trades people, who turned out to be as good as the NextDoorUK members told me they were.

As with all online stuff, you do have to be careful but the majority of our members seem ok.

I’m a Nextdoor member, have been since before it started. You’re supposed to use your real name & address but I don’t go along with that. I look in daily, can be useful, the council and cops post info on traffic hold ups and stuff. It’s mostly about missing cats and people looking for housekeeping jobs.

Ruthio, thats the one I used to be with too, Streetlife.
I dropped out when it was taken over by NextDoor.
Why would an American site be interested in what goes on in our village lives here, I wonder?
I have decided not to join.

I get local crime news sent from Action Fraud and local police, and I would prefer to trust that source, I think.

I had to look up what Nextdoor meant, never heard of it.

We have Neighbourhood Watch which is a community-based crime prevention program which aims to improve the quality of life within a neighbourhood by minimising preventable crime and promoting closer community ties… It is supported by the police though personally I am not a member of my street’s group.

The nearest to Nextdoor I can think of are Facebook groups which are neighbourhood based, I am a member of my suburb’s group, for example over the last few days it has reported on flooded roads before the NSW Live Traffic App does.

The invitation letter thingy is one of the things I really, really don’t like about Nextdoor

Basically, if you are a member you are opted in to let Nextdoor send out postal invitations to people you don’t know but live close to you in your name and giving your location. It’s a way of getting your permission to send out their junk mail on your behalf💌

You can opt out, but I don’t think a lot of members know it happens anyway

So if anyone here is a member it’s worth checking to see if you’ve been sending out invites to random people you don’t know! :fearful::rofl:

Having said that, it depends a lot your area but there are some very genuine people and groups on Nextdoor. I prefer local community Facebook groups, they tend to be more active, but if you don’t want to join Facebook , Nextdoor could be an option :+1:

I’ll check my settings to see I’m opted out . I always make my settings on security high even with face book.

Next door is a very good source of information though
