This is a great project .
Non native species of trees are of little value for native wildlife & conifers are very poor at removing carbon dioxide. Unlike native species of tree which eat Carbon Dioxide their whole life & each native species of tree supports native species of insects, birds etc etc.
And Oak & Beech are great on poor quality soil. Both species have something called, marcescence. This means they keep a percentage of dead leaves on them all winter, so they can drop them in spring, when they need food the most. This allows them to out compete other species of trees on poor soil.
Native trees make far more sense than non native species, both for the local environment & the planets atmosphere.
I have never heard of marcescence thank you Gee.
It never ceases to amaze me just how many trees in UK towns and cities are deciduous and why evergreens weren’t used in greater abundance.
Deciduous trees are generally more attractive and as Gee has stated consume carbon dioxide and provide home for birds and insects.
Conifers and exotics like Rhododendrons don’t do much for wildlife and are IMO atr dark and dreary .
It just seems that for 6 months of the year deciduous trees seem unattractive and pointless and their falling leaves are a pain to get rid of. Personal preference I guess.
Nature put deciduous trees here for a reason.
Nature put us here for a reason as well. Is that working out well too?
Allegedly .
