Absolutely beautiful Bruce, and the girl posing on the fountain is easy on the eye too…
Thanks for posting…
Such a shame that I will never get to see it live…

Superb photos, thanks. I note the pragmatic approach of one of the abseiling painters. The other two were wearing helmets, but realising that from a great height, it’s not going to help if you fall, so you might as well wear a sun hat to protect yourself.

The Ibis are everywhere, known as “Bin Chickens”, they are a plague. I never saw any when I first lived in Sydney in the 1960s and wondered where they came from until I found this.

Funny you should say that, I have never thought about it but recently I have come across videos from newly(ish) arrived immigrants detailing culture shocks etc and one thing they all comment is how clean the place is compared to where they came from.

Personally I don’t entirely agree, on my walks I always carry a plastic bag to pick up rubbish which is usually fast food wrappers and containers. I have a great deal of sympathy for communities when they try to prevent a Maccas or KFC moving into their area.

Go 1 minute in

I was in Sydney for the year 2000 new year celebrations. Great holiday, stayed with an old friend at his house in Paddington. Then, with work, I was able to visit again in 2018. How the whole area around the bridge had changed. Lots of apartment blocks, restaurants, and the rest. Was it better? Not sure.

Fabulous photos Bruce. Sydney looks amazing. I’ve heard what a beautiful city it is from people that have been there. But it’s unusual to see photos of anything apart from the Opera house. The park looks stunning.

Please save up and go to Oz. It is fab. My recommendation is Sydney, Melbourne, wine valleys and up to Cairns. But it is huge - bigger than Europe. Just go.

I’d love to and hopefully will go one day, but I have too many family commitments at the moment to leave the UK for any extended period. I would really like to visit Tasmania too. I also came across Palau in a novel, a tiny island east of the Philippines . Same side of the world so if I do a trip that far, I’d love to visit there too, as looks absolutely amazing.

Thank you, Bruce.
So they were introduced then & are now wild.
We get the odd Ibis here in the UK, as an accidental vagrant.
The only one I’ve seen was a Glossy ibis at Lodmoor in Weymouth Dorset, though there have been other species of Ibis I’m sure.
There have been several bird species re-introduced here that did live here but went extinct. The Great Bustard were introduced on Salisbury Plain some years ago, huge birds.
White Stork in Sussex & Red Kite, love that bird, but none here, where I live yet
Sometimes a good idea, sometimes not. So far the birds introduced here seen to be doing OK

It is not quite true to say that they were introduced, they are a native bird common all over Australia, they just appear to have gone mad in cities as a scavenger. (like the seagulls in the UK perhaps? - I remember my parents complaining about them). The “introduction” merely made them come back.

Edit:

I meant to add that the White Ibis are not a feral bird, there is a myth that they are an introduced specie from Africa but while they are related to the African Sacred Ibis they are definitely a native bird.

Hi, Bruce! What a thoroughly enjoyable collection of photos. You did a great job of taking us along for the walk. Thank you!

Your son has a gorgeous urban view, and Sydney looks like all that it’s craced up to be. The weather looks perfect and all the public spaces look well-cared for.

It’s so nice that you are having such a nice stretch of days!
