My new laptop is an acer put out by Microsoft

With Windows 11
The home page is MSN news and it is the pits. So much rubbish, so many ads.
Click on a story and get a few lines.
It has co-pilot. Effin useless.
I wanted to search something, I had Australia in the subject line.
Never showed anything from Australia, only UK.
What a useless system.
There is a feedback button bottom right of page.
Left feedback.
“Has to be the worse home page of any. Co-Pilot is useless. Microsoft is a fraudulent company (The head of the consumer watchdog has slammed Microsoft, claiming it “deliberately hid” a subscription option from Australian customers.)
Be prepared for a billion-dollar fine.”

Luckily Google search engine is still available.

Have you tried Firefox browser? I find it very good for the homepage.

I guess you will be one of the many people not saying happy birthday to Bill Gates today? He was born Oct 28 1955.

I think you are muddling up the brand of the laptop with the brand of the operating system, they are not related.

You have a laptop with a Windows operating system but it could just as easily be Linux.

You can delete Copilot and a lot of the Windows programs/apps, you can change the homepage in the browser to anything you want. You can change the search engine and the browser to anything you want.

Personally when I get a new computer the first thing I do is delete all the supplied programs that I don’t use and I turn off all the intrusive data mining that I can.

You might find a program called Shutup is best for the latter.

BTW in most search engines you can limit the search to Australia by adding “:au” at the end of the search string. It is not 100% effective but pretty good

Google searches always seem to load local results first but I use DuckDuckgo which is less location oriented

Windows 11 isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I have found a number of stability issues with it and it’s various updates have caused a number of registry corruptions and errors. It may look all nice and fancy, but it’s less reliable than Win 10. The best OS, in my opinion was Win7, and wished I still had it.

That CoPilot is a waste of time and effort and MS should have spent more effort in making Win11 better and more stable. I would have switched to Linux Mint ages ago, but all my main progs I use are Windows based and will not run under Linux, although I have it as a virtual machine.

First thing I had to do when I first installed Win11 was spend some serious time uninstalling all the garbage which comes bundled with it.

New computers always come with that sort of stuff on them but they can be tailored to behave and appear how you want then to with the choice of search engine and start-up page(s). Just need a little initial work.
