Can anyone remember their first kebab? There used to be a purveyor of such delicacies (Andy’s Kebabs iirc) which was a few yards from Turnham Green Station. I got my first (and indeed several subsequently) from there.
Blimey!
Happy days indeed !
I remember that part of the world so very well!
Turnham Green, yes, those parts, Shebu/Hammersmith, after a few beers, shish or donner, the choice was yours.
Nah. Bigger with a distinctive taste only Jewish bread has.
I’ve never eaten a salt beef sandwich myself but I have seen them being made.
I thought it was traditional to make them with caraway seeded bread but maybe there are other variations in different places?
I’m guessing it’s going to be caraway seeds, definitely a yummy addition. They are also very nice in braised cabbage, you fry them first to release that unique taste.
Apparently caraway was originally added to rye bread in Central & Eastern European countries to make the heavy bread easier to digest
hah! I should have read the last post before posting myself ![]()
We should really have an entire thread dedicated to the humble caraway. It’s one of the oldest spices used in British cuisine. Edited to add that this has reminded me of a rather controversial aftershave!
Controversial aftershave Annie?
I’m both stumped and intrigued ![]()
What almost immediately came to mind was the old Hai Karate adverts from way back when. I guess I’m way off target.
But getting back to topic , caraway seeds are delicious added to home made bread! ![]()
also a shared cultural link across a number of European language groups - including English!
Aha!
Old Spice ![]()

Possibly the medics after they’ve pumped your stomach and put you in an induced coma. Think they’ll need a drink after that ![]()
