Michael Gove vows to end 'scourge' of empty second homes

“Big companies pay their fair share”. What is a fair share? As long as big companies, especially multinationals are paying the taxes that the law requires them to pay where’s the problem? Similarly if a business is paying taxes appropriate to how it is structured then again - where’s the problem. Tax evasion, that’s a different matter but even then there’s a grey area between avoidance and evasion! A whole lot when taxes crop up is pure envy, the phrase “pay their fare share” clearly indicates this.

Yes. It has happened in a number of North American cities.

If we can change laws to allow Universal Credit to be used to pay mortgages then we can change the laws to make sure companies making good profits pay more tax

What they pay now, isn’t their “fare share” because tax rules are rigged by the Tories to favour their chums and sponsors

So, while they may well be paying the correct amount within laws and how they structure their company, those laws aren’t written in stone and could and should be changed while cracking down on tax avoidance loopholes

It’s simply immoral to allow companies to be be making huge profits and paying out big dividends while paying their employees such low wages they need to be subsidised by the taxpayer through Universal Credit

Essentially it means that the taxpayer are subsidising the company profit and dividends because they can keep their wages expenditure low, subsidised by the taxpayer and thus increase their profits

Better yet cut right back on “Benefits” to provide only the necessities of life and rather than have a child benefit introduce a child tax - and I am being serious. I HATE socialism with a vengeance in all of its forms.

Low company taxes encourages companies to invest in a country. That’s why Ireland are doing so well at the moment, because their taxes are so low and it got up the EU’s nose when we said we were going to reduce ours.

It was Gordon Brown who introduced Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits which are now included in universal credit. The Tories have upped the minimum wage and made other adjustments to those who can claim Tax Credits, so they are gradually eliminating them.

And I bet you’ve noticed a little bit that I HATE Capitalism and NeoLiberalism in all it’s forms……:open_mouth::rofl:

But the UK is 100% dependant on Capitalism. Socialism is parasitic on capitalism.

No you’re not! We have a second home but it was rented to local people for 13 years who couldn’t get social housing. We now rent it out for holidays and it’s hardly ever empty. We encourage visitors to use the local shops, pubs and restaurants and the visitors book suggests they do.

AT So where are you thinking of going in order to avoid it ?

For now our financial arrangements minimise the amount of tax we pay in the UK. Having dual nationality makes physical relocation very straightforward when needed.

Do you mind me asking what is your second nationality ?

Israeli. However by “grandfathering” I would be qualified to claim Russian, something that I’m seriously considering in order for it becoming an option for my brat should it become useful for him and his family at some point in the future.

That is an interesting albeit not very peaceful place to go .
Yesterday I had lunch with a friend who used to live in Jerusalem she loved it and wrote a wonderful book called Bombs and Borgainvillea about her time there .
I spent an short time in Israel many years ago on a kibbutz and then I went to Jerusalem with my late son but I lived three years in Jordan it’s a wonderful part of the world .
I don’t know about Russia ( especially at this moment in time ) it’s too cold besides all the Russians I have met live somewhere else !
I am trying to persuade my husband to try for an Italian passport ( he is half Italian ) I wish I had another passport .

Israel is not on the agenda for relocation but is great to visit. We usually stay in Ramat Gan - I’ve got relatives who live there. Been a couple of years since we were there last.

Why do you hate capitalism ? If you believe in “spreading the wealth”, they wealth has to be generated in the first place.

Q1. How does that happen without capitalism ?

Once the wealth has been spread, the wealth needs to be regenerated.

Q2. How does the wealth get regenerated without capitalism ?

You can’t generate tax revenues from nothing.

The problem with socialists is they have never understood the Laffer Curve. A great example is when corporation taxes were reduced and tax revenues went up as a result in 2017/18.

So, If I wanted a holiday in Wales, at some house that’s being let out as a Holiday Home, I would have to pay up to four times the normal rental, for my stay there?

Goodbye Wales!

(Note - I know that this is about “Empty Houses”, but let’s see what an empty house looks like, or what the owner claims it is?

One that AirBnB use for a couple of weeks a year?

Not necessarily.

The plans are to allow councils to charge up to 4X the standard level of council tax on second homes. What the owners then charge for rental is up to them.

Gosh talk about killing aspiration .
