Michael Gove vows to end 'scourge' of empty second homes

The solution is to build more houses.

Labour - working well in Wales.

Not.

Some developers are trying that in and around West Sussex, but choosing lower cost known flood plains. They claim to have good drainage solutions that in practice do not perform. There is one such development not too far from my location that is proving to be hugely problematic🤬

Well, don’t buy a house on the flood plain then is the answer, the insurance would be huge as well, if you can get it.

The easiest way to build more houses is to change the planning regulations in favour of handing the decisions on what is being built and how, over to the community instead of council planning departments that take ages.

I suspect though, the reason for builders not building as much now is because prices of materials have gone through the roof (pardon the pun). Some friends of ours are having their house built and over the 2 years its taken, its cost nearly double to build with 90% of those costs incurred post pandemic.

I don’t think that is relevant at all, you learn to live in the climate you have. British weather never stopped me Youth Hostelling or camping when I lived there, you just did it.

Try looking at UK people walking the Pennine way on Youtube, they walk in weather I wouldn’t even leave the house during but that is the weather they are used to. I lived in a seaside town and no matter the weather people would walk along the seafront even if it was blowing a gale.

Horses for courses

all sounds like Britain going to the dogs? isn’t there an Isle of Dogs?

Just build more houses.

Stop rubber boat people and cleanse society of illegals here already.

Oh I do love the compassion on this forum…warms my heart. :smiley:

Compassion for economic “migrants”? Purleese.

I know, I know…but it just sounds harsh the way everyone speaks about them. And while I agree with the injustice of it, and the way our govt isn’t dealing with it at all…can you honestly say hand on heart that you wouldn’t seek a better life elsewhere, in that situation?

Seek - of course, but not lie through my teeth to achieve it.

Because they have no financial assets, simples.

@The_Artful_Todger , " l hate socialism with a vengeance"
That’s why you love Russia then ??
Donkeyman! :roll_eyes::roll_eyes:

Yes you would. Everybody would. There is no way anyone would spend all that money, and take all those risks, to turn around and say “sorry, I’m just here to see what I can get, because life back in my country is quite depressing actually, I’ll be poor all my life, and I’m not really going to get a decent house or anything, so…let me in why dontchya?”

Russia is not Socialist. The USSR ended in the early 90’s. Today Russia and most of the Russian Federation is much closer to Depression era America.

@The Artful Todger, So they say, Russia was never ever a communist or
a socialist state , the citizens have NEVER been allowed a vote untill
Putin took over, and that was rigged as there was no other candidate !!
Donkeyman! :thinking::thinking:

Hardly. The history of Russia and the USSR is fascinating to say the least. It also depends on who you ask!

I hear all the oligarchs have second homes in Russia then? ah brings back shades of Dr Shivargo heh?
