Losing Keys an issue?

Every time I park my car there always seems to be so many water drainage grates in the car parks I get paranoid about dropping my keys down one. I am always on the lookout for them and give them a wide berth.
Not so easy to rescue them either. Grates are usually solidly fixed in place.
Keys are either Stainless Steel or Brass, non magnetic.
Might be wise to, 1)Have a piece of Iron plate added to my key ring. 2)Purchase a telescoping magnet to retrieve keys. Always kept in the car.
Even though after 35 years of driving I have never dropped the keys down a drain, best to be prepared?

oh yes and don’t forget your ant-psychotic meds??

You could always do what bush service stations do with their dunny keys and attach them to something large so they can’t fall down the drain

I guess if I dropped them there, they’d be gone for good. I wouldn’t expect to get them back. Trying to find somebody to help me retrieve them would probably be the same hassle as ordering new ones from the dealer.

Yes, nowt worse than happening upon a psychotic Ant!!

And you could use it to clobber those nasty toilet spiders should the need arise?

give up driving

I know what you mean, I have parked beside one of those drains often, but not through choice. My method is to aim the key and press to unlock a good bit away from the car, then put the key back in my pocket untill I’m in the car with the door shut. If I drop it then, it only goes on the floor…Simples.

My car has keyless entry, just touch the door handle to lock/unlock the car, keys are kept safely in my pocket…

Not necessarily. I dropped a parking token inside the car and it disappeared into the car’s bowels. I never saw it again. :upside_down_face:

Attaching a mild steel plate, 2" x 1" - to your key ring and buying a telescopic magnet will work.
Longest extension is 2 1/2 feet.
I am going to do this at work this week.

Not a problem with keyless entry Bretrick, the Transmitter is so big and bulky it’s probably too big to go down a drain. They are a nightmare when I go for a walk/jog and have to find a place to conceal what is primarily the size of a small transistor radio inside my shorts…

You bragging again foxy…

Yes, I worry about doing this too, and follow actions already described here. I sometimes just pull the key from my pocket enough to find the ‘open’ or ‘lock’ button and then push them back down.

I used to keep the house key in my pocket but, a couple of times, I pulled out my wallet or phone and house key pinged out with them. So now I keep the house key and a couple of other small keys on a longish lanyard around my neck. Now, I know exactly where the key is and there is no danger of losing it.

I don’t do this with the car key but I suppose I could use a separate cord and take it off when driving.

I don’t come across the situation often. But the few times I have, I held on to my keys tightly. It doesn’t happen often enough for me to take precautionary measures. I hope your precautionary measures give you some peace of mind.

I always keep them in my knickers - strongly elasticated ones?
