Sorry for the disappearing act, everyone. My computer expired.
I looked at new ones but, apart from Apple, they are all now on Windows 10 and I do not want that. Bought this one second-hand from a friend - it is running on Vista which seems OK. My lovely Compaq, Windows XP Professional, is in the tender care of two brilliant techy guys to see if it can be resuscitated.
Many thanks to those of you who have missed me and sent emails.
Now - cup of tea in hand - I will try to catch up!!
Probably nothing - but it has had such a bad press - especially about that ‘cloud storage’ thing. I don’t want my stuff stored in hacker accessible clouds! Can that be switched off ?
If you find the dreaded Vista acceptable, you’d love Windows 10. Granted, the layout is somewhat different to what you’re used to, but I think it’s quite easy to adapt and get used to the new OS. I did, and there are informative sites on the internet to help you.
Something to be aware of is that Vista is no longer supported by Microsoft, so you run the risk of becoming targeted by some ‘nasties’. You may also find that some new software or hardware may not work under Vista.
Good luck with your old computer. In my opinion (and that of many others) XP is far and away better than Vista.
It’s great to see you back Silver, I thought you did a moonlighter, sneaked away in the night without a word of farewell, but deep down I knew you wouldn’t do that.
I hope they can mend your old machine for you.
