It is the smell of grass in distress.
When grass gets cut, it lets out all these different chemicals, trying to seal it’s wounds.

The grass is emitting green leaf volatiles - the cries for plants’ help that we are highly sensitive to and seed themselves deeply into our memory so we are drawn to them as food sources. I remember reading that these SOS appeals invite insects that threaten and repel insects that are doing the damage. What an incredibly complex and delicate world we live in!
