@Melgal70, IKEA !?!? Donโt they make a lot of sawdust ?
Never saw no meatballs though when l went there once ?
Donkeyman!
Vile stuff - all pasty and slimy. Strangely enough, I didnโt mind the spaghetti hoops introduced later, they didnโt seem as slimy or pasty.
They were an alternative to beans on toast
susan, My life was similar to yours then.
Was โListen With Motherโ, on the radio first, at 1.45 each day? I loved listening to Jimmy Clithero, The Huggets, Wakey Wakey, Wilfred Pickles, Have A Go and many more.
I remember gas mantles on the wall used for light. If you touched them, they crumbled!
I loved going to the Saturday morning pictures with my brother and two sisters. We sat in the 9d balcony seats as my mother said, not to sit in the 6d seats as it would ruin our eyesight!!
I wore my navy gaberdine mac with the hood up to go to the pictures as weโd just had our hair washed and didnโt want to catch a cold!!
I loved the little bottles of orange juice off the milkman. I think we had them just on a Saturday.
I loved the the orange juice and cod liver oil my mother got from the clinic but l hated the big spoon of Virol we had to take. She used to give us 2d to take it!
I loved the little bottles of milk at school, lots of children didnโt like it and we were allowed to drink the spare bottles! I loved being milk monitor and making holes in the silver tops with a ? Penknife, then put the straws in!
The first record l bought with a record token a friend gave me for my birthday, was โSailorโ by Petula Clark.
Funny old days but such fun and adventure because we were free. Free to run across the fields and far away and not come home until hours later.
I remember that too!
I remember disappearing for hours with my pals and all the games we playedโฆKick out ballโฆBritish BulldogโฆHopscotch โฆI remember tucking my skirt in my navy blue knickers and doing handstandsโฆwish I could do that now .
I often think kids nowadays miss out on so much indoors staring at their screens
Hi Art , me thinks you might have come from a posh family , you sat in the 9p balcony seats and had those tasty little bottles of orange juice from the milkman too ! We called the balcony the posh lot ! You even got 2d for taking the medicine , we just had to suck it up then spit it out when we could . I think you would have avoided me cause we were a rough lot ! I dont think I ever listened to the radio to be honest , but there was a listen with mother I believe . I remember โsailorโ it went something like this
Sailor , stop your roaming
Sailor leave the sea
Sailor when the tide turns
Come home safe to me
As I call across the sea all my love is there beside you dah de dah de da de dah
Now I shall be humming this all day
Lovely memories
Ah Ruthio thatโs lovely I would sing it out loud and it was another of my favourite songs .
Life certainly seemed simpler in those days but i expect for our parents it wasnt .
Iโll be humming all day now as I bet Art will too
I loved the the orange juice and cod liver oil my mother got from the clinic but l hated the big spoon of Virol we had to take. She used to give us 2d to take it!

Now I just lurved Virol but hated the local health clinicโs orange juice and cod liver oil - thank God for the capsules you can buy these days. I, too, was a milk monitor and we drank any spare bottles collected back up at the end of morning breaktime. IIRC, we had a little punch (like a cycle bell with a spike in it?) for making the holes in the silver foil bottle tops.
Thanks from me too, ruthio.
susan, It is lovely butโฆ so dated!! I liked โDowntownโ too!
Percy, Virol was awful! It was like, toffee gone wrong!! It made me heave!!
Saw this today and thought you might like to see it. Can you add anything to it?
Pinched this from FB.

I loved Virol, but hated cod liver oil. I could have eaten several spoons of Virol. The orange juice was lovely too, but school milk was warm & usually slightly off on warm days & I couldnโt drink it.
Virol
my memory is telling me itโs that thick dark sticky liquid that comes out in large dollops on the spoon and had a toffee sticky gunky oily taste and sticks to the top of your mouth , if it is then I loved loved loved it
Am I thinking right ?
I hated cod liver oil yuk
My mum used to give me malt and codliver oil on a spoon, I loved it. Apparently it was to โbuild me upโ so its Mums, she built me up a little too much LOL
Hi
