Winds of Morning

The fact that Five Books doesn’t consider “Western” a category of fiction already tells you one thing that ain’t right in the world. It used to be that a self-respecting bookstore always had a separate section for westerns. OK, so it was back in the days when one out of three Hollywood movies was a western. Those shelves were dominated by Louis L’Amour, Luke Short, and Zane Grey, it’s true, but with some mighty fine books nonetheless. Here are five good ones that the boys from the big publishing places tried to cut from the herd but are still well worth a read after a hard day in the saddle.

Jem just finished watching McCabe and Mrs Miller directed by the great deceased Robert Altman - a very sad and poignant film but great to watch - gunmen; whorehouses and gambling!! - just what we like heh! but Altman directed some of the best films of the last century and before

I am about to attempt to watch the authentic death of hendry jones - yes that’s hendry not henry! - toasted as the greatest western ever written - come with me Jem on a ride through the ranges!!

robert altman of course also directed the Mash film

Muchas grassiarse amigo Gumbani, as you know I like a good western story, and yes some of these great writers have never been taken seriously in the international world of literature, pure snobbery I think.
Hollywood did not help the cause of the western writer either, once they got their hands on the book rights they made their own of it, and back in the early days the Native American was always the bad guy, and the only good Indian was a dead Indian. Today everyone knows the truth.
Thanks for the list of recommended titles.
“Hombre” with Paul Newman was on yesterday, Richard Boone is the baddie, he has two bullets in him and when Newman comes out of the cabin to make a deal with him regarding releasing a girl prisoner Boone comes out from behind a rock and says “I got two holes in me Amigo” Newman replies “Well that’s usually enough for most of us” Christ who writes this stuff, it’s a howl sometimes.

well Jem try McCabe and Mrs Miller its free on utube - no you don’t need to copy and past just click and watch - but there are poor grain copies and not so poor grain so you will have to sift - but I would appreciate your opinion - this is a western like you’ve never seen before! a young warren beatty and Julie Christie!!

I see we are still on cowboys.
I have had a few round my house in the past.

I prefer the cowgirls myself!!~

Time for the theme to Oklahoma then???
Jem YouTube practice. X

I’ll watch it tonight in bed Gummy and give you my honest opinion tomorrow. I have cordless earphones which serve two purposes, one it lets me have the sound as loud as I like at nightime, and two it block out the wife’s horrible snoring.

How come nobody employs Native Americans to do house jobs, it’s always the bloody Cowboys who get all the good jobs, racialism again.

Gummy, about your thread in the Sports section, I’m asking here because I don’t want to ruin it with nonsense, you’ve been to Italy several times, perhaps you can tell me who Diabolical Pluto is? I’ve heard of Diabolical Lewy, he was a wrestler in Manchester in the 1960’s when wrestling was all the rage on Saturday TV. I remember him well, all the oul ones over here used to watch it, he was a grannies favourite.

My next attempt at liftoff will be on Friday 25th August at 9.30 pm. sharp. Tink yo.

I missed my lunchtime outing to the local today, I had to wait in for a parcel delivery for herself, it has just arrived and I signed for it, haven’t a clue what it is, don’t care really, so I’m off now for an hour or two. See ya all later.
