Leaving your keys in the front door

Have you ever left your keys in your front door overnight?

Then not realised it, until the following morning?..:open_mouth::open_mouth:

I’ve done that on a few occasions.

No, but have left the back door wide open during a dog walk! Not once, twice. :astonished::roll_eyes:

Yep. Have done the key thing a couple of times, although luckily within the porch so it wasn’t obvious to passers by.

Only once, I spent ages trying to find them in the usual places.
Never again!

Do you mean inside or outside?

My husband does it often, and he locks the front door when were going out and leaves them in the key hole.
Sooo, now he has to give them to me straight away.

On the outside.

Yes, I wondered. With the average keys people can pick the locks. My wife replaced our locks for units that can’t do that. She was concerned about security when she was alone (I was in hospital for weeks at the time) so now we have unique keys.
I digress…

No, but I thought it was a good idea to store a spare key in the bird house in the garden to fall back on just in case I locked myself out. To my horror it wasn’t there after a while. Later I saw something on the lawn not far from the bird house… A magpie must have snatched it and then lost or dropped it. Never again.

That’s interesting, I must look that up…I locked myself out once, i contacted a lock smith, he charged me a £100 , he had some device that went through my letterbox, he was in my house in seconds.

I usually lock the door from the inside now, and leave the key in and just turn it slightly.

That must have been quite scary,Dachs, it certainly would have worried me…

No never, but I knew a Lady who did it quite often, I use to do cleaning for her, every time I saw them I used to take them home and ring her on her mobile to collect them on her way home.

Yes, in seconds. Frightening, isn’t it? The ones we have now are Quantamatic - they might challenge your locksmith…

Can’t even find that type/manufacturer of lock online. :man_shrugging: Must be pretty specialised?

It was very frightening indeed, I also lock my six foot gate at night as well.

I’m on a main road so am extra careful about locking up , but one morning I came down and the front door had been unlocked all night . Another time rushing for the bus I came home 4 hours later to find my keys in the front door . Now I’m really careful , I lock my gate , my patio door , my inside door and front door . Mind you if I kick the bucket they will have to smash through all those locked doors to get to me

I was thinking that as well about myself, I have a special lock on the gate, it must be opened with a key, my Son is the only one with the key.

It can be quite scary when we live alone,Susan, we have so much more to think about.

I’ve never left my key in the lock but I do have a fear of losing my keys whilst I am out so I have a key safe hidden beside my garage with a spare front door key inside.
