Lá Fhéile Bríde!

According to the ancient agricultural calendar - today is the first day of Spring - which has to be good news. A time of planting seeds and pregnant sheep - a renewal of life. Ireland and Scotland also celebrate it as St Brigid’s Day, whereas Christians call it Candlemas. Call it what you will - it is a festival of light - when families would have a special meal or supper on St Brigid’s Eve to mark the last night of winter. This typically included food such as colcannon, sowans, dumplings, barmbrack or bannocks, and seedy cake. Often, some of the food and drink would be set aside for Brigid. Children would make - or be given - a Bride Doll ( corn dolly).

Now why isn’t this celebrated more? I’m all for this, and will celebrate it by planting a little seed in the garden :seedling: and make a cake.
