Kitchen renovations - planning mine, anyone else had one done recently?

I haven’t chosen the cooker yet. The woman who was here on Monday seemed to think it was the same rule for all. Yes, I realise there is a rule and why there is a rule, but I want to read the details for myself.

Here is one example - most manufacturers are different.
Have a look on page four.

Oh, that seems to be placed right beside a fridge. Page 4 Figure A. Is that allowed?

I haven’t even decided whether to have gas or electric cooker yet. Really I’d like to have comparative estimates. I think it’d be more expensive to have a gas cooker fitted as it won’t be on the same side of the room as the previous one.

Regulations (in the UK) for installation of cookers/hobs etc come under BS 6172.

Here’s a link to a part of the wider regs which has pictures and details of the clearances etc.

Oh, I got

404 Error

The page you requested does not exist…

The link refers to

“Installation of previously used domestic gas cooking appliances”

Oh, I don’t think I’ll buy anything previously used.

I know I’ll have to rely on them to tell me how the cooker must be positioned (they tend to do what they do anyway regardless of what the customer says) but I’d still rather read the rules for myself.

I wonder why kitchen fitters are so concerned about boxing things in?

Been to B&Q, had kitchen “designed” and paid a deposit for a survey.

Changed my mind about the tiles I’d chosen for the splashback. However, I have another week to think about that.

I think I will go with B&Q though.

The others I’ve contacted seem to me to be either too busy or under-qualified.

I don’t mind if I have to wait, but I want definite dates in diaries which others don’t seem able to commit to.

Yes, there’ll be 30 cm between sink and cooker, and between cooker and fridge.

Good luck with it all, Lila. The end result is worth all the angst.

I completely refurbished the flat I now live in almost three years ago, I bought it off a lady who had lived here for sixty years and she had never done a thing it was all the original fixtures and fittings. All worth it though for the view from the living room, I’m on the third floor and I’ve never been so happy in any property, I’m sure we’re on ley lines

Glad you found it worth it.

Moving here was certainly worth it for the view of a pond with swans on.

When I first viewed this house I thought I’d want to rip out all the kitchen stuff and start again, but it seemed so expensive, as it had all been put in new. It is wasteful, but I am going to do it anyway.

The tiles I want: http://www.diy.com/product/productcomparison/?backurl=%2Fdepartments%2Fflooring-tiling%2Ftiles%2Fwall-tiles%2FDIY566465.cat%2FColour-86004%3DGreen--Red--Yellow%2FLength-39968%3D147mm%2Fpage%3D1%3F%26pageSize%3D12%26categoryToFilter%3DDIY566465

Of course they’ll be more expensive than just having one colour.

Unfortunately, the link doesn’t work:

Oh well, perhaps I’ll be able to post a photo when it’s done.

keep updating this thread as the work goes along

You should not have to pay for a survey. That should be part of the purchase and installation price if you decide to go ahead.

When we had out kitchen in the previous house redone we did not pay any survey fees and that was for 15 units a well

yes it is free

That last bit should be in your home not at the store. The consultant we had measured the kitchen up and told us what units would fit where.

It was only when the costings were worked out and presented to us to agree to were we asked for a deposit on signing the contract

Go demand you money back

Having moved several times now I know what theses sales people are capable of. They have selling target to meet and will do almost anything to achieve it.

WhenI worked for BT we were sent on a selling course so we could push products in a customers home. it was a real eye opener the subtle tricks used. That was many years ago now

Yes, it is.

A lot of companies who used to do this for free have started charging now because too many wanted free surveys without going ahead.

Demanding money back = no survey = not getting the job done.

Not B&Q as it is stated on their web site I posted a link to, it is free

I had my free initial appointment in the store. And a nice set of 3-D pictures. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to pay a deposit for someone more specialised to come round.
