Funnier because the singing was so awful.
The backstory is that Valentina Hasan is Bulgarian, from the village of Zvezdelina in Bulgaria’s Kardzhali Province, but at the time, 2008, had been living in Spain and running two bars for four years so had become fluent in Spanish but had acquired no English.
On a visit back to Bulgaria, Valentina was made aware of the audition for the second season of Bulgarian singing competition TV show Music Idol. Although lacking talent, Valentina decided to apply anyway and was accepted. However, her only “material” was a version of Mariah Carey’s “Without You”, phonetically-interpreted by herself when she was 15, so that it what she presented to the judges.
Inevitably, Valentina didn’t make the cut to advance to next round of competition. However, her audition clip was subsequently uploaded to YouTube and has since garnered 19,000,000 views.
Someone made a small fortune off this. Too bad it wasn’t her.
