I’m a florist, and I do this for a living. This is just a tip on how to keep flowers fresher much longer. It’s so easy! Don’t wait until they begin to wither. You want to give your bouquet cool water, and keep it someplace cold like in a refrigerator. The cold will preserve the flowers for up to 5 days. ![]()
Thanks, good advice.
I may not follow this recommendation as I prefer to have flowers out on display rather than shut in a fridge. And I prefer my fridge to be rammed full of food and drink rather than flowers. Just a personal quirk of mine.
I prefer to enjoy my flowers sitting on a space where I can appreciate them.
Why keep them five days in a refrigerator, no one can see them, when you
can smell, admire, and appreciate who they came from for almost as long while in full view?
Never tried keeping water in the fridge for filling vases, but have used other methods.
Someone once suggested putting a copper coin in the flower vase, or a teaspoon of sugar in the water.
Tried both and seem to work quite well.Changing the water more often, and cutting a tiny bit from the stems when changing the water, also seems to help.
I vaguely remember reading that adding something to the water can help, it might have been sugar but I’m not sure.
Or Aspirin, although i never tried it myself.
Could be, think I’ve heard of that too.
You sometimes get a little sachet of something sellotaped to the stems of cut flowers… one for Jessica I guess! ![]()

Always use those magic granules, until the water needs changing, then i add sugar or whatever.
Wonder if @okfirstofall knows what’s in them.
