This has always been confusing but now, even more so. Petrol and energy costs have gone through the roof (most unavoidable expense), food, clothing etc all spiraling upwards and what is the Governments answer, the only tool in the toolbox, raise interest rates, to curb spending, haven’t the guys and gals in the HOC cottoned on, they are the only ones with the financial poke to still be able to spend on ancillary stuff?
Hi
Good Post Spitty.
Unfortunately Interest Rates hit those with the lowest incomes the hardest and protect profits and increase the wealth of those with assets.
We use the interest rate as a blunt weapon, other Countries take different paths.
Yep Swim, we are strangled by GLOBAL financial shenanigans, the only answer to raise DOMESTIC interest rates.
I thought it was the Bank of England who raised interest rates not the Government.
They are estranged, not separated.
@spitfire , That’s why they are called “conservatives” Spitty !!
They conserve the money for the rich !!
F- - k the others !!
Donkeyman!
So did I.
I went to the butcher today and bought beef sausages at $13 a kilo and lamb loin cutlets for $65 a kilo, decent prawns are about $36/kg - this is Christmas prices on steroids
Food is getting ridiculous after all the rain and fuel prices
Shylock want’s his Pound of Flesh.
Which ones?
The ECB is very likely to be doing the same this year for this would lead to a stronger Euro which, again, is critical to coping with rising fuel prices. It’s always a choice between the devil and…
Hi
You have a valid point, in practice however things are very different.
The ECB runs the Exchange Rate for the Euro, individual Countries are entitled to take their own measures to control inflation and maintain their economies and standards of living.
Here in the UK we have a mythology that the Bank of England is separate from the Government.
That is just a joke.
The Government appoints the management of the BoE.
Swim, I hope wendeey and Percy take in your post.
Hi,
I’m aware of that. I was just wondering which other countries you had in mind when you said that other countries would take different paths?
I saw it, but chose to ignore it, can’t be bothered.
Hi
Well that is me firmly put in my place.
