If you had two wishes

For me it would be a world without diseases and armed conflicts.

Seems to be top of the list Dachs, probably because it is the most improbable.

Should we not confuse the removal of freedoms with the rules that allow us to rub together happily and tolerate each other. As we introduce more diversity, so we must introduce more laws and rules.

Arguably, we should actually reduce the number of rules and laws foxy.

I agree Dex. something I saw on the telly was the amount of new laws passed each year by the government was phenomenal and surprising. Some were passed while the public was looking the other way.
Labels such as Racism, Homophobia, Misogyny, Antisemitism, Islamophobia, were rarely heard 50 years ago but seem to fill news media on a daily basis and seems to perpetuate hate towards these groups…

Exactly. The more you tell people what they can and can’t do, the more they’ll fight it, especially if it seems unreasonable.

Not at all, Bob. As wishes didn’t have to relate to degrees of likelihood, I just picked those that would really make a difference and which are the most important to me. They would be different if the likelihood of them coming true mattered.

Be careful, think three times!
Wishing OGF a “Have yourself a Merry Christmas” he may see Mary instead,
and take you up on that thought.
His answers on the flirting thread are leading me to this. :innocent:

Wouldn’t wishing to win the lottery or finding a gold nugget be important to you Dachs?
Sometimes you have to be a bit selfish and indirectly, all my family and friends would benefit.

A world without diseases or conflicts far outweighs winning the lottery or a gold nugget!!!
@Dachs is a person I respect for his integrity and unselfishness.

We could all learn something about ourselves, OGF.

How would a world without conflict work RN?
Perhaps the wish would have a sting in the tail, and all the people who you didn’t like and those who hated you were eliminated.

A long time ago salt was precious and used in the place of money…
A poor bloke who lived on an island wished for a mill that produced salt…
Suddenly a genie appeared holding a small mill.
A special magic word started the mill to produce salt.
Another special magic word caused the mill to pause.
The man was over the moon and purchased a rowing boat to take him to the mainland to use his fortune.
Clutching the mill in his hand he rowed out into the channel that separated the island from the mainland.
About halfway across he decided to make sure that the mill still worked.
He announced the special magic word and the mill sprung into action producing a small pile of the precious pure white salt.
Once the small row boat was almost full he decided to to stop the mill but had forgotten the magic word to stop it.
The mill continued pumping out salt until the small boat could take no more and sank to the bottom of the sea and the man drowned…
And this is why the sea is so salty now, the mill is still at the bottom of the ocean and continues to make salt…

The problem is being granted only two wishes.
If wishes are not expected to come true, we may as well be granted ten, and have a little fun with them!

Again, this is all about one’s selfishness.

Better to look beyond your own self, and focus on the betterment of others in our world. I’m attempting to see what options are open to enjoy peace in the future rather than immediate self gratification.

At the risk of disappointing you a bit, Bob, wishes for my personal wellbeing didn’t occur to me, given the limit of just two and the fact that the OP did not specifically ask for those. That doesn’t mean I don’t have them but they’d come second within the given framework. If you think it over, my family and friends and myself would also benefit indirectly from my more altruistic choice.

The genie is indeed out of the bottle when you think of the most imminent perils with the potential to eradicate mankind. Those are nuclear conflicts and, more recently, AI. And I’m being reminded of Einstein’s verdict about man as a third one. What are the special words to get the genie back into the bottle?

This is not a personal attack on anyone, just on the way this thread has developed.
I feel that it has not being used in the spirit in which it was intended…I could be wrong.
It goes without saying that every poster on this forum (including me) would wish for world peace and cures for all major illnesses, also to be able to feed the world and eradicate poverty.
However, because a few posters have highlighted this fact it has virtually killed this thread stone dead and nobody in their right might would dare to post anything that might resemble a selfish, mean, or thoughtless suggestion for fear of being a self serving, greedy b’stard.
So why post something that we would all like to see happen in the world…?
Could it be so you are thought of as caring selfless person who only thinks of others…It’s like donating to charity and then telling the world what you have done…
Is it to satisfy your own piece of mind and so you can sleep at night…?
Or is it to be better than somebody who doesn’t donate to charity, and make them ashamed of themselves?
Or is it because in this world of plenty you feel guilty living in a nice warm house with a car on the drive and a few quid in the bank while there are people suffering and hungry that you have to see on the news or pass in the street?
How attitudes have changed over the years. When asked most people back in the 1950’s would wish for food on the table and the prospects of a good job with some cash to spend.
The media and that man David Attenborough has made you feel like you are responsible for all the woe in the world and you are a blight on the planet…Well just ask yourself…Who actually is responsible for all the woe in the world? Could it be the people who we are supposed to have democratically voted for? Well it’s time we realised that they are not doing a very good job, and they certainly don’t speak for me when they send money and weapons to perpetuate war in other countries.

If I had two wishes it would be that…I wish that it was impossible to fly.
No aeroplanes to fill our skies or drones to transport destruction to our neighbours.
And the second…Brick up the Channel Tunnel.

Don’t shoot the messenger just because you don’t like the message.
I don’t find gratification at all in the realities of this world. It was the people who take the high moral ground who destroyed this thread that was meant to be a light hearted insight into the wishes of members and not a crusade to end the bad sh$t that happens around the world every day.

And my third wish has come true!!

Well, walk down the street and say “Good Morning” to ten folk, 8 won’t answer, seems some folks need to look into themselves before they can be “Bettered”, selfish beggars :icon_wink:
