I am now famous

Hi

An eventful day.

In the early hours alarms went off, loud banging and crashing from upstairs.

Did a 999 call to the police,I have an intruder upstairs…

Explained that I was in a hospital bed downstairs and she could hear the loud noises.
Gave her the keysafe code and the first cop was here in 15 minutes.

The noise was not an intruder, there was a serious fire upstairs and the noise was the plaster falling off the ceiling and walls.

He rang the fire brigade,I live very close to the fire station and they arrived very quickly, got another fire engine there and a manager.

The fire had started in heated drying horse in the front bedroom, set the clothes on fire and the room was well away.

Ambulance and paramedics arrived, decided to keep me in e bed on oxygen until the fumes had been vented from the hallway.

The houses either side where evacuated and i was stretchered out as soon as it was safe to do so.

I refused hospital, huge waits there and then corridor care.

In a police car to find a Hotel, the only temp accommodation available was the street peoples hostel.

I am now in a Holiday Inn Express until Monday, they have been amazingly good, a 60% discount on the room and a 25% discount on food and drink, breakfast is included in the room price.

Marine fish and corals are safe, a couple of extension leads to a nice neighbours hose.

Kinga has bought me some clothes and toiletries, those in the house are either burnt or smoke damaged.

Got a tablet to link to internet and the search will now begin to find the house insurance, the folder with all the house paperwork is just a pile of ash.

Good Job I have a sense of humour.''Kinga spent 4 hours sorting things out for me, Shawna is taking builder husband to look at the damage and hopefully sort some of the electrics and Shiv is here in my hotel room making me a coffee.

I am absolutely shattered at the moment.

For those of you who have the electric heated drying racks be very careful and keep checking them, They are supposed to have a thermostatic cut out to prevent fires.

Obviously the one on mine was faulty.

Blimey Swimmy!
Glad to read that you didn’t get hurt, I’m not surprised that you’re shattered.
At the back of my mind I always have a suspicion of things electrical left on overnight.
I have an electric underblanket that I use from time to time…

Only just stumbled on this Swimmy, Oh my God! that’s just terrible, so glad you’re able to post and are safe. Good to hear that services had it covered so quickly or I dread to think of what could have happened.
Also hats off to your brilliant helpers, they certainly have got your back.
Take care Swim and try and get some rest, I’m sure you will be sorted out quickly.
You were right to avoid going to hospital, I’d have to be unconscious before they’d take me away.
Let this be a warning to everyone with clothes dryers, I’m just glad I live in a bungalow…
Get some sleep Swim and catch you tomorrow…
PS:- did you have smoke alarms?

Oh dear certainly an unwanted 15 minutes of fame SF.

How badly damaged is the house? is it liveable? are you homeless? so many intrusive questions.

You are lucky to have had time to get out safely, my house is single storey but made entirely of wood with a tin roof, if it caught fire within 15/20 minutes it would be a pile of ash, I have seen them burn.

I hope you get the proper care, best of luck and best wishes.

Good question from OGF, about working smoke alarms! I know it’s rather late to be thinking about that but it’s a lesson to everybody.

Hi

Yep, working smoke alarms, actually installed by the Fire Brigade.

We have an integrated home system here, vulnerable person discharged from hospital, Fire Brigade are informed, they come and do a fire safety inspection and install smoke alarms.

I have a very expensive 6 digit key safe installed by the red cross free of charge,

Police, fire and ambulance have the code

How was the hotel stay last night Swim? Did you get some rest or was your mind working overtime. I know mine was, as I was thinking about you last night before I dropped off.
Wished I lived a bit nearer and could have helped…
Hope your fish tanks are okay, can they be moved or are they alright where they are?
I know you said they had power from the neighbours, but for how long?
Sorry for so many questions Swim, it’s stuff that I would be thinking about…

Hi OGF

I have a cabin bag, pale lilac so it doesn’t get mixed up.

It has my emergency meds in it, flannels , shaving gear, brushes and a comb.

A spare mobile and charger, spare house key, contact details of next of kin, details of my prepaid cremation and a copy of my will.

In an envelope, the password for my computer and other things like my mobile, the contact numbers for my carers.

A bottle of water, underpants and socks and surgeon’s gloves and an FFP2 facemask, a field pressure dressing and a hyperdermic.

Most important of all, a small multitool, with corkscrew, bottle opener and can opener.

Organised or what?

The receptionist put me in the only room they had, then moved me to a room next to reception when that became free.

She used to be a Carer, so well looked after.

They deliver the food to my room etc,

I am out of here on Monday morning as they are fully booked and I will have to go elsewhere.

I have someone looking at the ground floor electrics this afternoon .

The fish tanks are too heavy to move by a man with a van and will require a specialist company who have holding tanks for the fish and corals.

The big tank holds 540 litre water plus sand bed and the total weight is around 700 kg plus all the filters etc.

Well, you have given me heart palpitations reading your adventure, Swimmy!
Saying adventure, instead of immediate emergency, and dire consequences, and even worse scenarios that could have been calms me down.

That you are able to rest, eat, and relay this episode of your life shows what a remarkable resilient man you are. I’m in awe! So happy you have so many taking care of you. Hugs and more hugs, Swimmy.
