How wasteful is this?

The man from Amazon has just staggered to my front door with a huge parcel. I could not think what on earth I had ordered that was so large - was only expecting a few small things. Thinking they may have been all packed together I moved to close the door - but - he asked me to wait as he had more for me, and handed me four small packages. Couldn’t wait to see what was in the box!

Box measures - 30" x 23" x 10"

Then we have the paper - all 20 x Metres of it!

And what was in need of all this protection? A sack of tea bags measuring 20" x 17"

Anybody need a box and a paper mountain?

I make paper mache with the inside wrapping.

Amazon aren’t really on the ball when it comes to packaging, are they?

Now that is something I have never tried. What do you make with it, Pixie?

We get these all the time. Today it was a box of dog food and a lot of paper. I fold the paper neatly to reduce the space in the recycle bin. Then I cut the cardboard into flat pieces also for in the recycle bin. No waste.

I make bowls usually, or if I have a wire armature, I make little houses or figures. You don’t even need glue to make it stick - I find it dries really sturdy. Of course, you could paint it, which helps to strengthen it…but I prefer the natural look.

Or…if you bind books, you can use it for pages/or covers…the sections are already perforated so its easy to tear. :+1:

I can top that one - the box that my mum’s mattress topper came in is around 5"x3". Not heavy, just bloody huge - like carrying a small wardrobe. When the delivery guy dropped it off, I thought that he’d brought a parcel to the wrong house.

Blimey I would make an entire bed with that!! :astonished:

Yes, I’ve noticed the large parcels from Amazon, mostly full of ‘filler’ with the item just looking lost in the box
I wonder if it’s because their staff have to work so fast that it’s quicker and easier to just chuck the item into a big box then just pack it out?

I straighten out the packing paper, flatten it, fold it neatly and use it for my own parcels
I also keep their padded envelopes

I buy quite a few books from Amazon, mainly used but sometimes new
I notice that they are much more sensibly & carefully packed & wrapped - probably because they don’t usually come from Amazon themselves
Amazon act as an agent and the books are actually sent directly from a book store/dealer/stockist

Oh I’ve noticed this too! Buying from a regular place, as opposed to Amazon themselves. The packaging is so much more refined :joy:

Is my memory failing but isn’t that 5 inches by 3 inches? I don’t use these archaic measurements but I was unfortunate enough to learn them at school and i was sure " meant inches. Not criticising just curious to know if old timers disease has finally caught up with me.

Talking about wasteful, last month I skipped about half a dozen perfectly good walking frames from the care home where I work, one even had the cardboard still on part of the frame, I also threw a nearly new three wheeled walker away too,

Why, Primus? York Hospital is always asking for such equipment.

They don’t want them, no one will collect them,

A lot of people here in UK still use Imperial units. Inches, feet, pounds, and stones. As an engineer I have been using SI (System International) units for fifty years. That is universal except USA, Burma, and Liberia.

Yea but I think @Judd meant 5’ x 3’ not 5" x 3"

But still Imperial.

… yes

We never have amazon deliveries, but a lot of people around here do. And a lot of the boxes get nicked from doorsteps, and the thieving get filmed by Nest or Ring doorbells, uploaded to Nextdoor community website. Anyway, a favourite trick is to put used cat litter or something into the used Amazon box and put it back out on the doorstep.

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yes, I am sure he did, and I got what he meant but I was just checking if my memory was correct.

Aye, you’re right damn it. I meant 5’ x 3’ (feet).

I can use Imperial or metric without any problems (apart from mixing up " and ’ that is.

Most, if not all, of my customers over the last fifty-odd years are more familiar with Imperial measurements.
