How to stay young when we getting older

I hate exercising, too, but I’ve found that if I listen to audiobooks while doing so, it’s much more tolerable. Actually, when it’s a book I’m really enjoying, it makes me almost look forward to working out. I also listen to audiobooks when I’m mowing the lawn and doing other tedious activities.

Hi Pimmy. I suppose we are getting older. One of the things we do for exercise is walking the dog every day. It is also a social event. But any exercise must be some improvement.

@Idlewild I love that idea! I never thought of using audiobooks to make exercising (or any boring task) more bearable. Maybe that’s the trick I’ve been missing! If I find a really good book, I might even forget I’m working out. Thanks for the tip. I’ll definitely give it a try.

@Besoeker Yes, I guess we really are getting older—but hopefully a bit wiser too!
Walking the dog sounds like a lovely routine, both for fitness and making connections.
I don’t have a dog at the moment, though. I guess I’ll have to walk myself instead, less barking, but still good cardio!

Lack of exercise (walking/biking routine)? Need to change your gait? Over-weight?

I think I’m lacking exercise. Better start asap😁

Maybe start by walking more slowly but increase your stride. Find the rhythm between your inhale/exhale and your gait and stick with it. Do exercises later if you still think you need it.

That makes a lot of sense, I’ll start with slower walks and sync my breathing. A few friends have shared similar tips too, so I’ll take it step by step and adjust as I go. Thanks again!:slightly_smiling_face::smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

A good way to start in my opinion. :pushpin:

Hi Pimmy. As you know I am retired and that’s when we got the dog and that’s when I did the walking. He was a big, gentle fellow and well behaved.

Thank you🥰

He is super cute. I wish I could have one. I’m retiring in the next two years—at least to keep me company.

Thank you Pimmy. A bit of a tale if I may when I was younger. When I was school age I also had a dog, Rip, my faithful companion. Then I went to university then I went into business everywhere so no dog, That was until I retired and got Max.

My dog about 50 years ago.

Thank you for sharing such a lovely story. It’s so heartwarming to hear about Rip being your faithful companion back in your school days. Pets really do stay in our hearts, even after many years. And I’m glad you found Max after retirement, it feels like life brought him to you at just the right time.

Hi Pimmy.

You have to be careful exercising at ground level in Bangkok.

It is one of the most air polluted Cities in the World.

There are a number of ways of measuring air pollution, but the two main ones put Bangkok at either the 5th or eighth in the World.

In reality Bangkok is much more polluted than the results would suggest.

Governments can and do claim lower pollution levels by putting the monitoring posts hgh up buildings rather than at head height at street level.

Bangkok suffers from the Canyon Effect, heavy traffic on the roads hemmed in by tall buildings and concentrating the Air pollution at street level.

I have worked on this and in Bangkok I normally stay at Sukhumvit Suite Hotel, right on a very busy junction.

Exercise in your house or flat, as high above the roads as possible.

Hi swimfeeders,

Thanks so much for the reminder! I actually knew about the air pollution in Bangkok, but I totally forgot to consider it when thinking about exercising outside.

I’ll stick to indoor workouts instead, some light stretching or YouTube routines should do the trick. Really appreciate you looking out for me!

Yes, as I mentioned, there are loads of exercise routines on YT, at all sorts of levels, including seated, for seniors, and so on

Have a look at Tai Chi on YT
It is made up from short standard movements called Forms that are joined up into longer exercises, also called a Form – that’s why you sometimes hear people talking about ''doing their Form"
As with all sports, hobbies, and exercises, you start off simply & easily, then progress as far as you want or are able
The trick with Tai Chi is to join all those Forms into a continuous, flowing sequence, which is easier said than done!
You could also look at Qi Gong, which is similar but you do a block of the same movement several times then move on to the next block; again look at YT

See if you can find a class; if not Tai chi then there are various others, such as Yoga, Pilates, and so on
The advantages of a class or session are instruction, company, and and perhaps a bit of commitment on your part

You could also see if there are parks or similar areas where the locals go regularly for their sessions, typically Tai Chi, and in the morning

I agree about joining a class, it’s exactly what I’ve done recently. It’s the only way to get myself up and excercise, having a guide and being part of a group is a very big incentive!

I swim and sometimes do yoga to keep fit. Swimming is one of the best all round exercises that we can carry on doing throughout life. It’s also mentally relaxing because you have to switch off your brain somewhat when you’re doing laps. The combination is a good one for mind/body balance.

I’ve also had to change my diet in my fifties. No more booze and avoiding processed food where possible.
