How many of us really listen to music and understand the message?

A Red, Red Rose

BY ROBERT BURNS

O my Luve is like a red, red rose

That’s newly sprung in June;

O my Luve is like the melody

That’s sweetly played in tune.

So fair art thou, my bonnie lass,

So deep in luve am I;

And I will luve thee still, my dear,

Till a’ the seas gang dry.

Simon & Garfunkel ~ Bridge Over Troubled Water (LYRICS)

Truly a masterpiece song by Simon & Garfunkel

The words in some songs used to have a meaning to me in the days of new romance. The words of songs mostly float over me now without being really listened to.

There’s a Neil Young song, Last Trip to Tulsa from back in '68, ten minutes long, here’s a sample:

Well, I woke up in the morning
With an arrow through my nose
There was an Indian in the corner
Trying on my clothes

and

Well, I was driving down the freeway
When my car ran out of gas
Pulled over to the station
But I was afraid to ask

That was on my last trip to Tulsa
Just before the snow
If you ever need a ride there
Be sure to let me know

Whenever I am contemplating my life, and counting my blessings, this song really makes me appreciate each and every word.

Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me
Song by Gladys Knight & the Pips

Lyrics

… I’ve had my share of life’s ups and downs
But fate’s been kind, the downs have been few
I guess you could say that I’ve been lucky
Well, I guess you could say that it’s all because of you

… If anyone should ever write my life story
(For whatever reason) for whatever reason there might be
Ooh, you’ll be there between each line of pain and glory
'Cause you’re the best (you’re the best thing that ever happened to me) that ever happened to me
Ah, you’re the best thing that ever happened to me

… Oh, there have been times when times were hard
But always somehow I made it, I made it through
'Cause for every moment that I’ve spent hurting
There was a moment that I spent, oh, just loving you, yeah

… If anyone should ever write my life story
(For whatever reason) for whatever reason there might be
Oh, you’ll be there between each line of pain and glory
'Cause you’re the best (you’re the best thing that ever happened to me) that ever happened to me
Oh, you’re the best (you’re the best thing that ever happened to me) that ever happened to me
I know, you’re the best thing, oh, that ever happened to me, yeah, yeah

This is one of my favourites.I don’t actually live life like the song but it’s so well written I think.
I walk in shadows, searching for light
Cold and alone, no comfort in sight
Hoping and prayin’ for someone who care
Always movin’ and goin’ nowhere

This songs words resonate with me.

My Dad, Husband & my Son all passed. Son loved this band. He introduced them to me bye playing Green Day very loudly, all day until I knew most of the words to their songs, but this was the first one. :grinning:

I’m not really into romantic lyrics but I like something with a message eg:

I am the one in ten,
I’m a starving third world mother
A refugee without a home
I’m a house wife hooked on Valium
I’m a Pensioner alone
I’m a cancer ridden specter
Covering the earth
I’m another hungry baby
I’m an accident of birth

It was written by Malvina Reynolds but Pete Seeger’s version has the lyrics.

And they all play on the golf course
And drink their martinis dry
And they all have pretty children
And the children go to school
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university
Where they are put in boxes
And they come out all the same

Interesting one.It can be taken as patriotic or as a protest.I think this verse shows what it is.I think they leave it out quite a lot :grinning:

There was a big, high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said “Private Property”
But on the backside, it didn’t say nothing
This land was made for you and me

I was listening to this Phil Collins song and watching Emily in Paris, a tv show with his real life daughter as the main character. He left that family after a few short years. I hoped that he wrote this song with them in mind (although he probably didn’t; still I can hope)

You’ll be in my heart.

Simon & Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence (Lyrics)

And in the naked light, I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

Another song with deep meaning.
You Don’t Own Me - Lesley Gore.
When listening to this song I hear a woman finally saying, “Enough”
She has had it up to here being told what to do by the men folk in her life.

You don’t own me
I’m not just one of your many toys
You don’t own me
Don’t say I can’t go with other boys

This song came after so many previous songs portrayed women fawning around after their menfolk.
About getting men to like them, getting dumped by men, getting approval from men.
As if a woman could not live without a man showing her the way.

The song is about a woman telling off those men who think they own women.

And don’t tell me what to do
Don’t tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don’t put me on display 'cause…

You don’t own me
Don’t try to change me in any way
You don’t own me
Don’t tie me down 'cause I’d never stay

The song could also be used by guys who are in a similar situation.
We all see those relationships where the woman rules over her man.

The song is also about raising self esteem. Taking a stand. Showing that people can make it on their own without a prop supporting them.

I’m young and I love to be young
I’m free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please

The song was at the time, an anthem for women, of all classes who were at times made to feel inferior.
The song was released in 1963 but it is still very relevant today.
Sure, there has been change, but suppression still abounds. On both sides.

I’m young and I love to be young
I’m free and I love to be free

A great song with deep meaning.

You Don’t Own Me - Lesley Gore

How about this one?
Come a little bit closer - Jay and the Americans
In a little café
Just the other side of the border
She was a-sitting there a-givin’ me
Looks that made my mouth water
So I started walking her way
She belonged to bad man, José

So, he knows this woman is taken, she “belongs” to José - a bad man.

He knew that to get involved there would be much trouble

But he was weak. All she had to say was

"Come a little bit closer
You’re my kind of man
So big and so strong

I’m all alone
And the night is so long."

Playing on his ego, knowing that man is weak when titillated by an alluring woman.

So we started to dance
In my arms, she felt so inviting
And I just couldn’t resist
Just one little kiss, so exciting

Exactly the same as Gene Pitney, couldn’t resist…

But this guy is saved from what? A beating? Death?

He heard the guitar player say
“Vamoos, José’s on his way!”

Oh poop, I know I should run but the alluring siren sang once again…

"Come a little bit closer
You’re my kind of man
So big and so strong

I’m all alone
And the night is so long"

I think the lady enjoyed a little dangerous excitement.

The music stopped
the customers were the ones to vamoos, the café was empty

Then José entered saying
“Man, you know you’re in trouble plenty”

What did the pseudo wannabe lover do?

He dropped his drink and jumped out the window
And as he rode away he heard her say to José, yeah

Come a little bit closer
You’re my kind of man
So big and so strong
Come a little bit closer
I’m all alone
And the night is so long

What is it with men, can they only think with their ******s?

Great song with great lyrics. Complimentary to my question.
Thank you for posting. :slightly_smiling_face:

The line is in there, “you want to get the meaning out of each and every song”
