How many of us really listen to music and understand the message?

Let’s take a lovely song by Gene Pitney
24 hours from Tulsa.
Here he is, 24 hours from home, 24 hours from embracing the love of his life.

He pulls into a motel for a bit of kip.
As he pulls in he sees a lady standing out front and walks up to her.
“Where can I get something to eat around here?”
“Come with me and I will show you” she replies.

Being courteous, Gene asks here if she would stay and keep him company while he ate.
“Sure” was her response.

Gene was enjoying not only his meal but also the company of the lady.
The jukebox started playing a song and they danced.
Before they knew it, the sun had risen while they danced the night away.
Then Gene lost his mind, he started caressing and kissing her…
“I’ll die before I let you out of my arms” he whispered in her ear.

Gene decided to write a “Dear Jane” letter to his belle back home.

“Dearest darling I had to write to say that I won’t be home anymore
cause something happened to me while I was driving home
And I’m not the same anymore.”
"
“I hate to do this to you
But I love somebody new
What can I do
And I can never never never go home again”

Men!

Glad you said that…they blow with the breeze

I listened to a song yesterday, by Sinead O’Conner, called “Jackie” and its about a lost love of hers, some guy went out to sea and didn’t come back. Well, its only taken me a lot of years listening to it, to realise that not only is she standing at the beach waiting for her sailor guy, but that she is in fact, an actual ghost :astonished:

Every song has a story behind it. All we have to do is listen and interpret.

Have you ever found a song that seems to change meaning, depending on your mood?

Not that I can recall. If I listen to a happy song whilst sad, my mood will lift for the duration of the song.
Sad songs bring tears to my eyes many times.
You’ll never walk alone by Gerry and the Pacemakers makes tear well up, but after the song is over and I contemplate, then there is an uplifting message to the song

Oh I’m the opposite…:joy: Music to go with my mood emphasises the mood itself, and I listen to that type of music until my mood changes to something else. So I can’t say with any certainty that music changes my mood  This goes for happy tunes as well as sad.

My mother loved Gene Pitney.
We went to see him live,he was fantastic.
I listen to the words of every song,i don`t always like them mind.

A Red, Red Rose

BY ROBERT BURNS

O my Luve is like a red, red rose

That’s newly sprung in June;

O my Luve is like the melody

That’s sweetly played in tune.

So fair art thou, my bonnie lass,

So deep in luve am I;

And I will luve thee still, my dear,

Till a’ the seas gang dry.

Truly a masterpiece song by Simon & Garfunkel

The words in some songs used to have a meaning to me in the days of new romance. The words of songs mostly float over me now without being really listened to.

There’s a Neil Young song, Last Trip to Tulsa from back in '68, ten minutes long, here’s a sample:

Well, I woke up in the morning
With an arrow through my nose
There was an Indian in the corner
Trying on my clothes

and

Well, I was driving down the freeway
When my car ran out of gas
Pulled over to the station
But I was afraid to ask

That was on my last trip to Tulsa
Just before the snow
If you ever need a ride there
Be sure to let me know

Whenever I am contemplating my life, and counting my blessings, this song really makes me appreciate each and every word.

Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me
Song by Gladys Knight & the Pips

Lyrics

… I’ve had my share of life’s ups and downs
But fate’s been kind, the downs have been few
I guess you could say that I’ve been lucky
Well, I guess you could say that it’s all because of you

… If anyone should ever write my life story
(For whatever reason) for whatever reason there might be
Ooh, you’ll be there between each line of pain and glory
'Cause you’re the best (you’re the best thing that ever happened to me) that ever happened to me
Ah, you’re the best thing that ever happened to me

… Oh, there have been times when times were hard
But always somehow I made it, I made it through
'Cause for every moment that I’ve spent hurting
There was a moment that I spent, oh, just loving you, yeah

… If anyone should ever write my life story
(For whatever reason) for whatever reason there might be
Oh, you’ll be there between each line of pain and glory
'Cause you’re the best (you’re the best thing that ever happened to me) that ever happened to me
Oh, you’re the best (you’re the best thing that ever happened to me) that ever happened to me
I know, you’re the best thing, oh, that ever happened to me, yeah, yeah

This is one of my favourites.I don’t actually live life like the song but it’s so well written I think.
I walk in shadows, searching for light
Cold and alone, no comfort in sight
Hoping and prayin’ for someone who care
Always movin’ and goin’ nowhere

This songs words resonate with me.

My Dad, Husband & my Son all passed. Son loved this band. He introduced them to me bye playing Green Day very loudly, all day until I knew most of the words to their songs, but this was the first one. :grinning:

I’m not really into romantic lyrics but I like something with a message eg:

I am the one in ten,
I’m a starving third world mother
A refugee without a home
I’m a house wife hooked on Valium
I’m a Pensioner alone
I’m a cancer ridden specter
Covering the earth
I’m another hungry baby
I’m an accident of birth

It was written by Malvina Reynolds but Pete Seeger’s version has the lyrics.

And they all play on the golf course
And drink their martinis dry
And they all have pretty children
And the children go to school
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university
Where they are put in boxes
And they come out all the same

Interesting one.It can be taken as patriotic or as a protest.I think this verse shows what it is.I think they leave it out quite a lot :grinning:

There was a big, high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said “Private Property”
But on the backside, it didn’t say nothing
This land was made for you and me

I was listening to this Phil Collins song and watching Emily in Paris, a tv show with his real life daughter as the main character. He left that family after a few short years. I hoped that he wrote this song with them in mind (although he probably didn’t; still I can hope)

You’ll be in my heart.
