Who has said that?
Fair point, I am conflating the concept that the Labour party has forgotten their roots with the frequent criticism that one Labour MP has bought a constituency home for £800k. I took from this that £800k is significantly too much for a Labour MP’s home - given that the majority in this party’s roots would not be living in a £800k home nor ever afford an £800k home.
Whereas an expensive house owned by a wealthy tory MP is just fine.
The £800,000 home is not in her constituency. The problem arose because she failed to pay the full amount of tax, something for which, in the past, she has called for others to resign
Except that this wasn’t in her constituency and was, in fact around 260 miles away from it which is even further than the grace and favours London place provided for her.
In any case, as her mortgage is estimated at circa £4000 per month (quite apart from any further debts the amended stamp duty fee might now add to this), and since her reduction in salary will now lead to circa £5400 net income, she’ll probably have to sell up anyway. Given that house prices have dropped, she’s probably in negative equity.
If only she’d taken proper advice, all of this could have been avoided.
My error, as her constituency is Ashton. The house that is in her constituency is not directly owned by Rayner. The house and a funds from the money awarded to the family (after her son was born badly disabled) is held in a trust. The issue arose when Rayner was given (too good to be true) guidance that the old family home would not count as an existing property. However it has been judged that the degree of indirect ownership of the Ashton property is not enough to qualify the new Hove property is a first home.
I agree, Rayner would have done well to look beyond the appeal of not paying the full stamp duty on the Hove property - sticking the old family home in a trust also looks like a slight of hand. The second mistake was to hope this would all go away before it became a big issue. After all, a good few tory MPs and peers helped their friends win very lucrative PPE contracts and that all went away without any real fuss. A few million compared to £40k - surely £40k would be seen as small beer…was no doubt the thinking.
So you are saying if other people do something wrong that makes it OK for someone else to do something wrong?
Yes, this is why some people are voting in their own image
@Lincolnshire, I think we all know the story behind Rayner’s financial cock-up. She’s been very outspoken about Tory “scumbags” and left herself wide open to the wolves. For all her aggressive blathering, she should have known that.
As for the PPE contracts. Of course they’re rotten to the core and only a small number of miscreants have been pursued. Not really much one can do about that as the guards are guarding the guards, as it were.
She doesn’t do politics, she does bitching. I voted for these people as I was under the impression she’d be gone within a week of the election. I don’t know what Starmer sees in her.
Then I learnt that Blair advised Starmer that behind every NewLab leader, there’s a two Jags Prescot. But Prescot was a gent.
Spot On.
Ministers are simply Constituency & Party Representatives.
Not necessarily Qualified Experts.

#1. @ £40k Or

Lawyer Sued. She Joins. “Reform”.
The very reason why.
So many of Us, the Oi Poli. Are doing similar
Nope, I was suggesting that in light of the weak (that would be none) hounding of tory MPs and peers who lined their own pockets and that of the their friends to the tune of tens of millions that Rayner and the Labour party maybe thought her heeding poor advice on stamp duty would not be seen as that important. But of course they all forgot that the tory press is suddenly very energetic, resourceful and vocal when it comes to finding fault with articulate Labour MPs. And tory MPs themselves are very good at suddenly becoming outraged at any fault found. This story about Rayner is primarily about faux outrage.
Edit for clarity - the faux outrage is from the tory press and tory MPs - I have no doubt that people expressing their disgust and anger at Rayner at genuine in their own outrage. Outrage here is like a virus grown in a lab, it starts artificial but when you catch it the effect is real.
All I can say is whatever their party they’re an uninspiring bunch and simply just out to feather their own nests.
Most discouraging to any member of the public hoping naively to find a poltician with integrity.
I agree @Morticia. I was discussing the present political situation with my son and he asked me if there was any politician who I would trust - I couldn’t think of anyone, what a state of affairs.
All the electorate wanted was a bit of hope, direction and steadiness after the farcical last couple of years of the Tory government. We all know that it’ll eventually turn to sh!£e at some point. It always does. But I think we kinda hoped it’d take longer than 6 months of being in office.
Its a hot potato Dex, why oh why would anyone want to run with it?
Hi Morty
My life has been such that I have had to work closely with with some Politicians.
Not by choice, just sort of ended up there, not everything turns out as we wanted life to be.
Politicians with Integrity are few and far between, but they do exist.
They are even rarer at Minister Level, they tend not to float naturally to the top.
I was quite young and idealistic when I first started to have to deal with them directly.
In the ensuing 4 decades I came across 4 whose names people would recognise and two of them, would I think, surprise some.
You would get a communication asking for Information in Confidence on a specific matter, which you could supply and which you would never be disclosed as the source.
These things where current and where a rat was smelt, someone deliberately misleading the Public.
You had to be very careful in who you dealt with, as some Politicians would drop you right in it without a thought if it suited them.
You could lose your job and your Pension.
Two were Labour, two Tory, none Lib Dems.
Not a huge percentage of our Elected Representatives, but totally trustworthy.
We would be totally stuffed without such people.
Nigel Farage (pronounced ‘faridge’ like garage!?) has been exposed as a hypocrite, the scummy little toad that he is:
My MP is a lady of letters I am still awaiting a reply to the last one I sent her.
I judge people, especially politicians, on how they treat others. I had cause to write to my MP, a Tory, some years ago regarding a problem I had. Within 2 weeks he had contacted the relevant department, sorted a solution and replied to me.
Over the last 6 months I have contacted 3 Labour politicians, my local councillor, the regional mayor and my MP - none have replied
Its the same when you ask a question on Ebay.
