Homelessness has spiked

Here in the US we’ve seen a spike in homelessness during the pandemic. There are literally small and large tent cities, where the homeless have gravitated. The city had to take measures, and started building organized and monitored tent cities on parking lots.

Is this happening where you live, homelessness increasing?

There is absolutely no need for anyone in the UK to live rough. It is 100% a matter of choice.

Really? I didn’t know that. :surprised:

It’s all in the wording. Being homeless doesn’t necessarily mean living rough, there are plenty of homeless people couch surfing or living in shelters.

Australia and the UK decided to get rid of mental institutions many, many years ago (1990s) in favour of smaller accommodations so the governments happily closed the Asylums but forgot about the promised community based mental health care.

Many of the people living on the streets should have been in institutions or community mental health care but have ended up on the street. it is largely a matter of funding.

I don’t think Covid has made much difference especially with the moratorium on evictions

Yes. People are given hand outs each week and if roofless are provided with emergency accommodation and temporary accommodation which while is often far from ideal is made available.

Unfortunately the socialists describe this as being homeless because it is not permanent which, like the definition of poverty in the UK creates entirely the wrong impression.

It’s not a matter of funding. It’s a matter of choice.

If, however, “candidates” choose to spend what is given to them on drink or drugs they have made their choice but even then many large towns and cities provide el-cheepo tents to give some protection.

Me? I’d let them just deal with the consequences of their choice.

Wouldnt you give them damned good thashing to go on with as well Basil?

Here we also have resources for the homeless. The shelters or emergency accommodations, however criminal behavior drug use and abusive staff, chase most people off. As far as to why someone is in that situation is not for me to judge. I don’t have all the facts on each individual, however saying that it is their choice puts the onus directly on them and off society.

the last thing somebody who is in this situation needs is judgement. So good on you.

Dead right Danny. Here now homelessness is hitting middle class, previously successful or at least coping people, single, families who just cant manage any more. In Australia now rents are so high that even some people who have jobs find themselves behind the 8 ball. The “Australian dream” of home ownership is gone for many young people. I reckon our situation here would be similar to yours. Ive been to Colorado. It reminded me a lot of Western Australia here. Affluent…to a point. But a lot colder in winter.

Hell yes! Then set the hounds on them

No it isn’t. You don’t know anything about why a person lives on the streets, so making a sweeping statement like that is absolute tosh.

Not everyone who is homeless, has addiction issues, Todger. Again, another sweeping statement.

One factor could be the USA delaying covid funding for people during the pandemic over and over again by Biden.

The other part is Biden allowing so may people into the USA by reversing Trumps border controls. I suspect there are many homeless people from over the border in the USA now, just like we see in France, Italy, Greece etc in the EU because of their open immigration/border policies.

Biden yeah

It is easy for people to criticize the homeless, but they rarely have any knowledge of what put them in that position!:frowning:
I am sure all of us have made mistakes in life, but if there is no help how can they hope to find a home.

For those people who think it is their own fault I would suggest they try living on the streets for a month, to find out how hard it is. Their ignorance shows a lack knowledge & a distinct lack of humanity.
I am sure that many homeless people lost their lives during the winter months of the pandemic & applaud all organizations that give them the chance to lead a normal life with a roof over their heads.

Danny I think the tent cities are a first step towards getting people a home & I wish them well!

That’s perfectly true but using the description homeless does not mean living on the street. Because of typical obfuscation from socialists it includes people in emergency and temporary accommodation. It’s similar to the way that poverty is abused. Poverty is defined by a formula which means that there will always be a percentage of the population who though living “high on the hog” will be described as living in poverty.

Of course you would you have also told us you have no empathy for them.

Anything else?

:surprised:

Not at Fawlty Towers it isnt Pixie. Basil knows best. Those dreadful homeless deserve everything they get right Basil?..

Well that’s perfectly true. Some weirdos like to live alfresco. Used to be called tramps.

:lol::lol:

I see absolutely no humour in that remark, Vlad.:018::018::018:

People who chose to live on the streets by their life choices certainly DO deserve everything that results from their decisions.
