I was reminded of probiotics in the herbal tea thread. When I was looking up some teas, I found that some of them have probiotics. They’re also in Kind breakfast bars, many yogurts and lots of other food items.
Probiotics are supposed to help with gut health. Some people feel they help with mental health as well since they say that the stomach is like the second brain. An upset stomach can lead to an upset day.
I haven’t tried probiotics yet so I’m curious about other people’s experience.
Have you taken probiotics and has it been helpful for you?
It’s the pickle juice that’s meant to be very healthy to drink. I am not brave enough to drink it neat!
I think the pickles in brine are better than those with vinegar (at least better for your teeth). I knew about this but didn’t realise the health benefits after exercise. Natural electrolytes but more palatable in a sports drink maybe?
There has been a big interest in the health benefits of sauerkraut for the same reasons. I’ve even seen it in M&S foods. The Germans are way ahead on that one! It’s very nice cooked with some bratwurst.
I tried probiotic tablets and they did help. I felt a lot happier and my brain worked way better. I stopped after the first covid jab as my health went all over the place after that. May start again thanks for reminding me!
That’s nice to hear. Thanks! It’s always nice to find ways to be happier.
I wonder if the contents of the tablet makes a difference. There are so many brands and ways of taking it. I also wonder if the probiotics in foods would be just as helpful.
Yes, I have taken them off and on for three years. They do seem to help get me back to a regular tummy again. Also, I love yogurt and that is one daily habit I take to heart. There are so many good bacteria in it, I swear by it.
I buy the pro-biotic Yogurts…never sure if they are still active though…I enjoy them so if any gain, then fine…I take a half spoon of pure as in medical; not cooking… Bio Carbonate of Soda, Daily.
I have had some real problems with digestion, at various times…touch wood not now, would think it’s related to my genes though…Dad Sister Daughter for starters.
Kimchi is an excellent probiotic, I started making it using vegetables/salt and, Gochugaru (Korean Chili flakes) see below. The problem was it made the house smell of rotten cabbage even when stored in the garage
I have been taking a wee tub of Yakult for the past year, I take it on an empty stomach first thing every morning. I have had much better digestion than I used to, so I’ll be keeping on with them.
You can make your own yogurt and cultivate it using coconut milk or almond as well.
Fermented vegetables is another thing that can be made at home to increase probiotics as mentioned. All very good ideas and far cheaper than purchasing them.
It’s believed by many that the health of your digestive tract is about 80% responsible for our overall health.
I’ve taken probiotics every day for quite a few years now. I’ve always had problems with my guts but since taking them, my gut doesn’t act up nearly as much as it did…
