Not exactly Saving ones Life. But a near miss.
And having a Profound effect. In adult years and Parenting.
For Becoming Involved in Saving/Helping another.
Scenario. 1955.
Two 18yo Student/Apprentices near London.
Coming home from a boxing club. At Uxbridge Underground stationâŠ
Half a dozen Teddy Boys. Beating up four USAF airmen.[Girlfriend Probs]
One Policeman trying to stop it.
Who had been knocked to the ground against a wall, Bleeding.
We piled in, Blocking the officer from the Teds.
The cavalry arrived: UK & US Military Police.
With a forearm under my throat, I was pinned to the wall.
AND arrested. Together with the Teds.
Locked up overnight. Magistrate Court next day.
The Original Policeman was hospitalised. Not there to give evidence and spell out the incident.
ALL. Eight youths fined ÂŁ5.!!
That doesnât read as Much now. Five weeksâ wages then.

My father went berserk.

Provided first aid to a few, the odds are, they would of survived anyway. Larryâs HUMMV got hit by an RPG and got shrapnel from his hip down. Kept his leg but still drags his foot.
Canât remember his name, we called him Hollywood because thatâs where he was from. A piece of shrapnel bouncing of the armor and hit him in the jaw.
The LT caught a rock in the face from an explosion. He got real good plastic surgery but he didnât look like he did before.
The only one that I really did save was the kid that drowned in the stock pond. Eyes and lips were blue when I got him out of the pond and performed CPR and he came back. Thought I broke his ribs and told the ambulance when they showed up. He said better broken ribs then dead.

Yes, I have. When I was working in the USA, I once helped a patient with heart disease who was having a heart attack. I recognized that something was seriously wrong and made sure he received medical help in time. Thankfully, he survived.
He later came back to thank me, and his gratitude meant so much to me. It was one of those moments that reminded me how precious life is, and how even a small action at the right moment can make a huge difference.

I have most likely been best at saving my own, sometimes with great desisions.
Sometimes it was pure luck I am here Thanking Him daily for giving me the chance.

My 83 year old neighbor, Marsha, who has some health conditions. I was the one who had heard her yell for help. She has slipped and fell down, and she hurt her back. She was fiercely dehydrated, and had been on the floor for hours. If I hadnât been there to call rescue she would have passed out from dehydration. Thankfully, I was there to save the day!

Certainly a Major Decision.

Not a Person. But similarly, An Animal.
Haverfordwest Wales. 1960s.
Having escorted a girl a mile home. After a dockside shipâs party in town. 01.00 hrs.
Pitch black. Unfamiliar with the area.
Dog lying in the road. Screaming in agony. Hindquarters crushed. No phone. A mile away from town.
Panic dilemma.
Should I break its neck? Putting it out of its pain.
Simply could. But Could Not.
Picked it up and laid it beside the road. Devastated, Slowly walked on.
Screaming stopped. Walked back, and it was dead.
Back on board at 02:00 hrs.
Everyone asleep. Except me.
Undisclosed, Unable to sleep well for the rest of the deployment.
Still vivid to this day. Whenever I see an animal in distress.

That is terribly sad Quint, and something that stays with you alwaysâŠ
Personally no i havenât, but my nephew was a volunteer for the Samaritans years ago, as well as having a regular day job - he would man the telephones in the evenings, and often at Christmas.
I often wonder how many lives he, and other volunteers like him, help to save by talking them out of suicide.
