Promising it would all be so much better. Of course the reality is now proven that it is very far from so much better out of the EU. It is in fact quite a lot worse. How do all those empty and now evidently fake promises from Nigel help bolster his credibility?
She wasn’t great, she created most of the problems the UK now has to deal with. But that is an aside. As is a quick mention of the money making efforts she embarked on after being PM.
This argument (all senior politicians are in it for the money so Farage is still a good guy) is pretty weak. The argument might address Farage’s earning from his TV work or even from his payments for promoting a product. But it does not address these large donations or the fact that he did not declare them.
Thatcher, like Blair later, did set up a foundation in her name and used that vehicle to earn money after her time in the commons. She also, like quite a few retired politicians, took on advisory work for large companies and wrote a couple of books. Blair has build his foundation into a large advisory business (that is, its more successful than Thatcher’s similar attempt). But note - these actions by such retired politicians only happened when they were … retired from politics. This is a significant difference from Farage’s earnings and donations - which happened when he was one of two directors of Reform UK.

I quite like Kemi Badenoch and her policies, but we have been let down by the tories before, but never by Reform (yet) so I’m going to give Reform my vote.
You could say that about every party Primus and just not vote, but I always use my vote.
Sense has nothing to do with it Azz, some of the best unorthodox leaders in the world have had their critics, they wouldn’t be outstanding if they didn’t they’d just be boring old farts like John Major or Edward Heath.

Well that’s how you make it seem Lincs. We are not, and never been politically aligned, we come from totally different worlds, and as such my priorities will be different to yours. You post about the economy and how leaving the EU was a mistake. I on the other hand, think the priority should be the influx of grunts and bringing industry and jobs back to the UK.
By jobs I don’t mean more accountants and bean counters, I mean engineers, plumbers, electricians, bricklayers, and yes…Miners and fishing, because mining and fishing were industries that supported whole communities. Shops, small engineering factories, and transport. We seem to have lots more houses around Doncaster but very little industry.
And at the end of the day, it was industry that made Doncaster the place that it is.
People came from all over Britain and beyond to work in the mines, International Harvesters, ICI (originally Nylon Spinners), Pilkington’s Glass works, Crompton Parkinson’s, Pegglars, the Plant works (home of the Mallard and flying Scotsman) Burton’s Tailoring, SR Gent (supplier to Marks and Spencer)
and hundreds more family run companies. Dad made bottles for 45 years at the large ‘Rockware Bottle Plant’ and Mum worked as a conductor for 40 years on the privately owned bus company.
Most of the industrial areas have street after street of houses built on them now, and on the road where some of the biggest companies stood, are full of car showrooms.
God only knows where all of the people of Doncaster work now.
I actually do not understand much of your thinking as, to me, it does not make sense.
You do not seem to care that leaving the EU negatively impacted the UK economy. But you want more jobs in the UK. Do you not see that a poorer economy means fewer jobs or worse jobs? Do you not think that my practical view of the economic benefits of being in the EU actually support your hope for more jobs?
You then describe specific jobs - traditional jobs. Often not very well paying jobs. What is wrong with well paid office jobs? I do not understand why you are picky on that jobs people should have. Is it not better to simply want people to have a good job that pays well and has good prospects? Why limit the choice? What’s the attractiveness of factories?
Then you hark back to days long gone for much of the western world. Textile manufacturing - all shifted east and not coming back again. And some jobs you refer to are bad - bad for ones health, bad for job security, just bad. Any sensible miner in the 50’s would want their kids to get the education that would mean never going down a mine. You refer to your family. Here’s mine. Both my grandfathers were fishermen sailing from NE Scotland. Both were very clear - no son of theirs was going to sea. It is too dangerous and the income too precarious.
The new world of work is different from the 50’s but that does not make it bad. If I’d kids I would guide them to getting a job in commercial banking or insurance or selling technology services - really good money. That would give them income to afford decent housing, spare cash for fun, and good pensions for old age. You seem to want kids to go off and work on a production line or laying bricks and earning a basic wage even with overtime. I’m going to suggest that is not the very best bit of career advice. Better to be a car salesman - you get decent salary and good commission.
Back to Farage.
His attempt to duck the parliamentary investigation into the £5m gift he got might be backfiring for two reasons. It looks like the 13 Aug by-election will be so much of a farce that Farage himself might un-resign. If he goes ahead it will look very stupid campaigning against a man with a bin on his head. More and more are noting the utter waste of money he is causing. Everyone will observe that its not Farage versus the establishment in any way at all.
On top of that poor decision, it seems there is now a police investigation into possible money laundering with yet other gifts Farage has been getting. The payment routing for gifts from Fiona Cotteral (George’s mother) are suspicious to say the least. Someone was trying to make things opaque for some reason.
So Farage made the greedy mistake of accepting a huge gift (not a bribe, no not at all). And made that worse by lobbying the bank of england on behalf of the donor of that gift (so confirming that the gift was a lot like a bribe). Then made another mistake of accepting more big money gifts and gifts of help (house, social media support, security). Then made the big mistake of trying to hide all that and not declare it. Then made another mistake of not having a convincing justification for it all (even a half convincing lie) so went through a cycle of a few doubtful reasons. Then made the whopper of a mistake in resigning to force a by-election to try to make it a Farage vs Establishment vote (someone please explain how it would have been such a thing). Then made a spur of the moment mistake of threatening a journalist with some sort of attack on the journo’s employer (nothing says freedom of speech like trying to threaten a news company).
I wonder what is next mistake is going to be? He seems to be on a roll.
