Happy St. George's Day

Will now just sit back and wait for the usual puerile comments that he was a Turk. Where’s me popcorn…

And Roman at that! What have the bloody Romans done for us eh?

:rofl: You always get dilly downers! Think they’re smart and telling u something they think you don’t know, just laugh and go along with it :woman_shrugging:what

I don’t give a flying, it’s about legend and tradition and he’s ours 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿☕️

And what better thing to be than a nation of dragon slayers?

I always celebrate cos I’m weird and I like that it’s Shakespeares birthday too :+1:

So, flag is up, family over for supper cos they know I’ll be cooking. Always get out the bar billiards, shove ha’ penny and Escalado then when they’ve gone the old man and me are going to watch that Blithe Spirit film

I’ve already made the apple pie, we’ll have that with custard, cream and ice cream. We’ve got the “Katie” cider in and I’m doing steak with English mustard sauce, onions, tomatoes, chips and asparagus. No starter but I’ll be putting out cubes of English cheeses, bread roll slices, pickled onions and Branston for them to pick while I’m cooking

Is that all genuine English? probs not but who cares and it’s going to be yum

Vlad, don’t be a grump, they built Hadrian’s Wall didn’t they?

We definitely need a campaign to celebrate St George’s Day, I think it should be a Bank Holiday 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Funny, I never met a Turk, or an Italian, called George.

Can’t be right.

(There’s a George lives down our street!)

We fly a St George’s flag in our village war memorial garden on St George’s Day - a nice modestly sized flag, not one of those monster-sized things.

I walked down there today to pay my respects - but I didn’t have any particular celebration -
I had hummus with red pepper and celery sticks for lunch and veggie pizza for my evening meal - Oops! No traditional English fare, there! :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I’ll make up for it tonight and have a traditional Eccles cake from Lancashire! :joy:

Looks like a lovely place!

Plenty of Greeks called George and they are neighbours

Anyway it’s always a good day for St George

I sometimes feel a little sad for England on St. George’s Day, their patron Saint isn’t English and never lived here, St George’s day is never a bank holiday. England doesn’t have its own parliament or national anthem.
Shouldn’t England have its own Parliament and anthem?

Anthem, yes, definitely! As long as it’s catchy and not too woke.

Parliament, no, don’t want to paying expenses for any more of the wastes of space

St Patrick was a Brit from a Romanized family, who cares? Mine’s a Guinness

I see they did have a St George’s celebration in Trafalgar Square in London this year. If it’s on next year, I’m going 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

To be honest, the idea of “celebrating” the anniversary of someone’s death doesn’t sit well with me - celebrating their birth would be more appropriate but I suppose that was probably not recorded.
Marking his death with some symbol of respect is understandable, but I don’t want a Bank Holiday to have a knees up or anything.

Although I believe the death of St George is celebrated much more in parts of Spain than it is in England, with traditions of giving red roses and making St George cakes.
