Hi flowerpower,
Your situation is the very reason why I made this thread. That ‘transition stage can be trying and difficult but there definitely are things you can do.
I think Mups idea of highlights is a great one. With highlights you don’t have any solid lines showing so the transition becomes more muted. Most women prefer this type of transition. It’s probably the easiest with great results.
How you transition depends also on style and length of hair. I think it’s much easier for someone with layered hair to add highlights that look natural than it is for someone with longer hair.
For myself, I wanted a definite line of contrasting colours because I am going for an ombré look , but I have to admit , that the first 5 or 6 months were difficult. I bought clips and kept clipping my hair back to purposely expose my new silvers and after a while it looked cool.
From the way you described seeing your silvers, I think you liked them too.
I love my silvers in pure virgin form.
Good luck either way.
Do any of you compliment complete strangers on their hair?
It instantly puts a smile on the persons face.
Its something I enjoy doing and I do it often.
While out shopping a while back I saw a woman with greying hair that must have been almost to the floor because it was caught up on her handbag and looped around.
She could have been a mennonite since we live near them.
Anyway she turned around and her face just beamed with pride. It really was beautiful.
Thank you to everyone. What happens when you decide to just go grey? Thats the bit I dont understand. Surely you still have colour to grow out from your highlights? Are these permanent highlights?
I think the idea with doing the highlights is that you won’t have a permanent stop and start line from where your new natural colour grows in. Some people who do it this way, who do actually want to grow in their natural colour , would gradually lessen the highlights as it grows out, making the transition not so harsh and noticeable.
Do you have layers in your hair or is it basically one length?
Hi Bratti and all…I thought I’d post a picture of Blue and me around the same time I had let my hair grow in naturally…white/silver. I can’t even imagine dying it…like I use to… This picture was taken around 2006 at Christmastime…
Shut up! You two have known each other and been friends for a while now. That is really terrific. Thanks for sharing a pic of both of you. It’s nice to put a face to a name.
Your hair is thick and curly Beautiful Filly and you quit cold turkey like I did as far as colouring. Isn’t it hard at first? You look like you are a blond growing in the silvers which, in my opinion, makes one of the nicest transitions. Gold and silver locks look so lovely together. My girlfriend who is only 3 years younger than me colours her hair blonde and she adds streaks of colour. It looks so cute and sassy on her.
Oddly enough I don’t miss the dramatic colour too close to my face but mostly I don’t miss the labour intensity of hennaing my hair. Mixing the henna paste, allowing for activation, applying to the roots and waiting for hours for my roots to get done.
I had to do this every 10 days .
Growing in the silvers feels so liberating and the great thing is that the colour silver is in now.
And please let Blue know that she owes me no apology. I’ve got mental disorders that interfere with my ability to communicate effectively so I understand that. Viewing another thread here reminded me of that. This is the main reason why I hang out here. It’s not that I feel superior. It’s that it’s better for me and everyone else but hey…
Hi ya Bratti…I know what you mean, it’s always nice to be able to put a “face with a name.” Funny thing is, we seldom look the way people imagine us looking…IMHO.
My hair isn’t as thick, nor as curly, as in this picture…it’s really thinning now and has been for about a year.
I did quit cold turkey…and to be honest, I think it was in about 1996, rather than 2006. I had a lot on my plate at that time and wanted to make life easier for myself. My arms use to ache holding them over my head whilst dying my hair. Actually Bratti…I was a brunette at that time…however, blonde when I was a young woman.
Odd that you should mention Henna. The very first time I dyed my hair at age 15…I used powdered Henna. And, it had to be mixed with peroxide in an earthen wear bowl. I was so excited…and ended up with Flame Red hair. Let’s just say that my father was NOT as excited as I was…
I am seldom without bangs…but I do love this picture.
Of course I shall let Blue know, that’s no problem. “Birds of a feather” surely do “flock together.” I am so glad that you put the word “Crazy” in our introduction…
Hi Mups…I can no longer see the picture that I posted either and am truly annoyed with Photobucket. For months now I’ve been receiving emails from Photobucket re: Third party posting at a cost. Looks like they own my photos now. Grrrr
