I have just sneaked out of the Annual Conference meeting as I was bored with policy motions - they are virtually the same every year. There was one highlight, a excellent talk by a Professor from (ironically) the University of Wollongong about banks and bank closures. Basically he said that in the world there are two types of businesses, Banks and every other kind of business - because banks are the only businesses that fail and take all the other banks with them (contagion) so rely on taxpayers to fund them if they do fail.
Apart from that my day has been spent eating quite nice supplied food and listening to a lot of old fogeys waffling on (including myself).
I am sure that your day is far more exciting. Anyway I must wander back now or I will miss a talk on dentistry and more free food.
Morning all – damp start to the day but the sun is attempting to break through
I am glad you managed to enjoy at least one aspect of the conference Bruce (I am sure the free food will help keep your spirits up!)
This morning a company is collecting my old cast iron garden furniture to be renovated – it will be expensive but we have had it for many years and think it will be worth it!
This afternoon I am due for my covid jab – I have never had a reaction to them but everyone I have spoken to this year have said it has left them feeling very unwell for at least 24 hours, so am a bit apprehensive.
Good morning!
Dull, cloudy, but dry and not too cold
Nothing much planned for today, which is just as well, as I’m feeling a bit tired
I have 8 or 9 unread books plus two part read ones, so spurred on by the recent report about book reading I’ll spend today keeping up with the washing up & easy tidying, but mostly sitting around drinking tea and reading
Unseasonably warm for the time of year in South Yorkshire almost 13 degrees C as I left for my walk this morning and yesterday was the same. Our close friends birthday yesterday so we took them out for a meal at a garden centre (their choice not mine) and afterwards tea and scones from M&S…Managed to pick up a pair of trousers that fit me. I’ve recently put on a little weight and my wardrobe full of 34" waist no longer meet around the middle so I’m having to restock.
Green bin day this Thursday so I’ll have a wander around the garden, rake the back lawn, and see what I can chuck out…
Fabulous weather made for a fabulous-er run this morning, and I was in good company with half of the community out on the trails. While they are a bit dangerous (never occurs to them that there are cyclists and runners coming up behind them) and I have to call out “Passing left,” to safely dodge the wanderers, I can’t say I blam anyone for being out there on such a beautiful day. I am back to at the university this morning.
@Bruce your thoughts on banking bring up a great concern here, too. Smaller banks are stressed these days with lending rates up and a glut of loans that were written for sky-high mortgages and business loans. While the large banks are safe, the economy is dependent on these precariously positioned banks all across the country. I would like to see the federal government raise the insurance on individuals’ accounts, which hasn’t really changed since the 1970s.
Sheila, your investment in your furniture is a good one and I am sure you will be pleased. I still have my grandparents’ set that has outlive both them and my parents.
I am envious of your day, @zulu. I can’t remember the last time I coud devote a day to books of choice.
Looking svelte there, @OGF! Purchasing scones and pants at the same time tickles me a little, but as you know, we don’t want our BMI too low as we venture into the last few decades of life. You have probably never had to count calories as an active man, I am someone who has always had the enemey of weight tryng to catch up with me in the rearview mirror. I am looking forward to that day when I chuck it and eat the good bread, drink the champagne, and revel in the pasta without a nagging sense of guilt. I am counting down the days…
I am am counting down the seven days until our national election, knowing we will get some blessed relief from the barrage of commercials and rhetoric that have left us drowning in politicians. I am sure you all are tired of hearing about it too. Is it possible that campaigns can lowing IQ? It feels like it
Alrighty, time to dust advance statistics, so I can clear the cobwebs well enough to tutor it for a few hours.
Indeed, I learned long ago never stand between a pensioner and free food.
The Professor has a paper he submitted to the Australian Senate bank inquiry, as soon as I have downloaded it and read it I shall be in the ear of my local MP (who also happens to be Finance Minister). His electoral office was near me so we often had long chats but he has since moved his office to another suburb so I don’t actually. see him as often as I used to.
He currently owes me a letter about all soft plastics going to landfill in this country and what the government proposes to do about it.
