Good Morning Saturday, 15th February 2025

Good morning all on this summer weekend, not many to go before Autumn starts on 1st March. That storm last night dropped 15mm rain.

Went for my walk this morning followed by a quick visit to the supermarket - I am back to my pre covid activity of daily shopping. This was the main road on today’s walk.

Believe it or not this is a section of the longest continuous national highway in the world, Highway 1 - it circumnavigates Australia, go south you will end up in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, go north Sydney and Brisbane. Actually I don’t think it goes to Darwin, and there is still an unsealed section just south of the Gulf of Carpentaria (no plans to rename that The Gulf of Australia) and a lot of it has been bypassed by expressway (including that section in the photo)

It is 14500km long, I have not travelled all of it but have been on most of it.

BTW Cyclone Zelia came ashore to the east of Port Hedland and will temporarily disrupt our iron ore exports from there ($500 million a day).

However here on the east coast it is all sweetness and light.

Have a lovely weekend.

Take care…

Hi

Nothing as exciting here in Shrewsbury, just more of the same.

Grey skies, rain, cold and with an even colder wind.

Only one carer here for an hour today, so very restricted in what I can do until they come sometime this afternoon.

Enjoy your day.

Morning all – yes it is Groundhog Day again weatherwise!

Ever felt that someone is tryiing to tell you something?! A few days ago one of the lights under the kitchen cupboard fell out of its fitting, next day a candle in one of the decorative candle holders was upside down (!). the following day a picture which had sat on a shelf for 3 years suddenly fell over and today none of my emails are working! I am considering giving up and going to live in a cave somewhere!!!

Now if you will excuse me I will go and hide in a cupboard!

Take care – hope everyone has a better day than I do!

A damp start here too .

@SheilaP ,it seems a bit freaky , is your house haunted ? if you bring the beast from next door in, a cat will let you know if a spirit lurks .

Good morning from the wetlands of South Yorkshire.
:duck:
Had a bit of a restless night last night and woke up feeling wobbly but managed an early morning visit to Tesco for the weekend shop. Life goes on.
Just one degree C on the thermometer and tipping it down with rain, it’s a good job it’s a rest day so no walking.
Our nearest garden centre is about 8 miles away, so that will be our lunch venue today, they do awfully good pies…
:yum:
Nice to see and welcome Pimmy on the good morning thread, it’s at least one good thing the internet is useful for…hearing from our friends overseas. Int’ the World Wide Web brilliant!
:astonished:
That looks like an amazing road Bruce and I can understand why you want to spend so much time travelling on it. Although your roads are a bit newer than ours and ours were mostly a gift from those clever Romans. Unfortunately, it looks like the Romans were the last people to do any maintenance on them…
Love the map by the way Bruce…

As I said there are only a couple of bits of Highway 1 that I haven’t been on - from Mcarthur (Borroloola) NT to Normanton Qld - a section I will probably never do. That is the only section that is not bitumen.

The other is Norseman WA to Perth via Esperance but I am thinking of doing that section next spring, or at least as far as Margaret River or Bunbury perhaps. It will only be my third crossing of the Nullarbor Plain followed by my first crossing west to east.

Good fine Florida morning!

It’s nice to read that you have made your way to this morning thread, Pimmy. Welcome!

That is a bit of an exaggeration with the skies gray, but it’s warm enough that running was a pleasure and all the windows are all flung open. Well, not exactly flung at my age, but you get the idea

@Sheila, I don’t know about you, but I think my house needs its own full-time doctor for diagnostics, treatment, minor procedures, and at times, full-blown surgeries. In the 18th century, it was not uncommon for ministers to also be doctors. I’ve always thought that doctors should double-train as car mechanics, but these days, I think a combination of physician-house contractor might not be a bad idea:. “Here are some antibiotics for your sinus infection, and I replaced the wax ring on the toilet while I was at it.”`

@Swimmy, do you still see your Polish friends, who were like family?

@OGF, isn’t it funny how rest days are anything but? I feel compelled to do all the driving errands, wrestle with the finances, and clean out drawers that turn into painting kitchens on days like this…

@Bruce, I think that you suffer from the “Let’s-just-go-a-little-farther-and-see-what’s-around-the-corner” that inflicts so many of us :world_map:. It’s outstanding that you have seen so much of your home country, and you have outfitted yourself so well to keep going. We all look forward to your travels and photos.

I started thinking about the few states that I haven’t visited in the U.S. The Dakotas are wide-open prairies and farmland, but Montana is home of the incredible Glacier National Park, that I surely hope to visit. After all, who could resist a byway that has the name “Going to the Sun Road”?

Surely, a missing verse from the Bible is, “Blessed are the sanders, for they shall inherit the detailed perfection of heaven and Earth.” Besides another day on my belly or stretched to ceilings that I cannot reach to scrub, it’s another day of filling and sanding the countless tiny little imperfections that come with a house where people actually live. Those who patiently fill, sand, run hands across, and then perfect walls, furniture, marble sculptures, house exteriors, cars…are the most admirably attentive people on the planet.

And with that, I have a date with sandpaper and Steely Dan coming through the speakers

Have a fine day!

There is one stark omission on my map which I intend to correct in May on my way to, or from, Darwin.

I have never been to Julia Creek, have been to Hughenden and Cloncurry many times going north/south but never on the road between the two towns. It is a bit of a detour but it has to be done, it will only add a few days to the journey…

Hi

You are an inspiration Bruce.

Advancing years do not mean a boring life.
