Just returned from my coffee and cake morning meet up. A bit of fun as always.
Called in to the Asian Supermarket on the way home, I wanted to get some Cardamon seeds but they didn’t have any however I could not resist the Pork Crackling, it is pricey but terrific. Despite the label it is actually made in Australia.
After swilling much CAMRA type beer and sitting in the sunshine munching on pub sandwiches yesterday today is a day for restraint. This stuff is lovely by the way…
Good Morning good People,it’s a lovely sunny one here and set to warm up nicely later,so will get the lawnmower out once My lazy Neighbours are up out of Their beds…It’s not a Bank holiday here in Scotland…but every day’s a holiday for Me…Have a good one Folks,x
Afternoon everyone
A very nice sunny morning and just right for a ten mile bike ride out in the country.
Everybody must have gone to the coast because I hardly saw a car, the roads were deserted. No chance of us going anywhere near the coast today.
Mrs Fox’s friend text her to say that she wasn’t going for their usual walk, so after I got back I felt sorry for her and agreed to go for a three mile walk up the lane with her.
The things you do…
My Casio stopwatch has stopped! it had a ten year battery in it (it said on the front) but I started using it in at least 2000 so it’s done well…
It’s not a straightforward job to replace it, so that will be this afternoons job…
@Bruce I couldn’t help but smile when I saw the picture you posted. That is Thai pork crackling. I think it must be made by Thai people even if the label says produced in Australia because the Thai letters on the packet are so clear. I enjoy eating it too. My favorite way is dipping it in chili paste. It is crunchy salty and so tasty as a snack.
Good afternoon everyone, nice to see you again on the thread @Janicelain.
I went for a long walk in town this morning and along the way, stopped at the travel agency, to book a day trip for me and my son, to Sorrento and Capri next Sunday.
I just hope the weather behaves itself, forecasts seem good.
Stopped at the supermarket and noticed that many shelves are still empty or scarce ! August is a holiday month for everyone here, including suppliers, and since we’re only a small town, who cares if you don’t find your favourite fruit and nut mix snack?
Enjoy the rest of the day forum friends and happy Bank Holiday for those of you living in countries where it’s celebrated today.
Here in England it is called Pork Scratchings and is sold in Pubs.
There are two types, one which is deep fried pork skin, very unhealthy.
The second type is the crunchy one made from not fried but rendered pork skin.
The rendering is to produce lard, used for cooking.
The skin and the thick layer of subcutaneous fat is roasted at a high temperature to release the fat, which is then filtered and cooled to become cooking lard.
The deep fried method is an absolute nono for heart patients like me.
It is a very good artery blocker.
Rendered scratchings are crispier, denser ,very little fat, but high in protein and particularly collagen.
They are fine for healthy eating and heart patients.
@Rose2 Wow Rose, sounds like a lovely plan with your son—Sorrento and Capri will be amazing! Fingers crossed the weather behaves. As for the supermarket… well, if the fruit and nut mix is missing, maybe it’s the universe telling us to try chocolate instead . Happy Bank Holiday to you too, i don’t have holiday here!
@swimfeeders Oh that’s really interesting I didn’t know there were two kinds Thank you for explaining it so clearly I think I would prefer the rendered ones too sounds much healthier and the extra collagen is a nice bonus.
Thanks @Pimmy, it isn’t actually bank holiday here, we had ours on the 15th.
I end up eating both - chocolate bars and fruit/nut snacks!
Nice to chat with you again.
I think it is made for export to Thailand but obviously the Asian supermarket gets them. We have a number of Thai people in my area, there is even a Thai restaurant at the end of my street. Originally the family that started it spoke hardly any English so must have been new arrivals, they have since sold it to another Thai family who have obviously been here a lot longer, the mother calls everybody, “Love” in a very Australian accent.
The restaurant is very popular you have to book on the weekends to be sure of getting a table.
That sounds lovely Bruce. I can just imagine her saying “Love” with an Aussie accent, it must be so warm. No wonder the restaurant is always full. Thai food is hard to resist.
@swimfeeders That’s wonderful. Street food in Thailand really is the heart of our cooking. Each region has its own taste and style. Personally I love seafood the most.
