Good morning everyone, yes, it is Friday the thirteenth! Thank goodness I am not superstitious, touch wood.
Threw the bathroom mats in my washing machine because it promises to be a hot, sunny day until the chance of a storm this evening, They are probably dry already it is heading for 31Ā° today.
Went to the chemist to fill my prescription then home again waiting for a friend of mine.
When he arrived he brought me some home grown tomatoes I made him a cup of tea. We had a very pleasant morning. A couple of the tomatoes will go great with cheese in a wholemeal roll this evening.
Want to get the house vacuumed my daughter arrives this evening for a four wheel driving comp over the weekend, also my son rang me to tell me that he was driving home after his last day with the navy. A new adventure begins for him.
Good morning on this rainy Friday 13th. We donāt have this superstition so much here, but there are many different legends as to the origins, one of them being about when the Knights Templar, in the middle ages, were persecuted (apart from a small number who fled) by Pope Clement V under orders from King Philip IV of France, between 1307 and 1312 and apparently the orders to bring them to trial for heresy were given on Friday 13th October 1307.
The Robin is singing letting me know its there , I must put some dried worms out .
Im not superstitious on Friday 13th , nothing bad happened as I recall to me , I remember my parents had that many bad luck sayings it was hard to open your mouth without putting your foot in it .
Maybe its a Victorian superstition.
We are in for some Sun tomorrow , hope the weather men have got it right, these grey days seem to be going on for ever .
Morning all ā yes, grey day again today, with light showers forecast
Wishing your son good luck and fortune for the next chapter of his life Bruce
Had a busy day yesterday, spent 2 hours putting up the Christmas decorations ā I donāt remember it being such hard work and tiring. Rewarded myself with a strong cup of coffee!
Set up the new DVD player, still needs a little tweaking ā something about the aspect or something (not that I understand that) ā will have to get my neighbour to have a look, but at least it works!
New blinds fitted, very pleased with the result. The fitter was very friendly and chatty. I not only had new blinds to replace the ones which collapsed in my bedroom but also new ones for the spare bedroom, just as well, as the fitter showed me the screws were barely holding it up and was likely to collapse soon! That would have been embarrassing if it had happened when my guests are here!
One of my double glazed windows has condensation between the panes so it needs looking at, the fitter gave me the name of a local company which he has used, he knows the owner and recommends them, so that is a job for the New Year
Today I must get around to writing my cards, buy and wrap some presents and there is still some paperwork which needs filing or shredding.
Good morning - Dull, raining and chilly but I canāt go out today anyway ā¦at least not until the District nurse has called to change the nephrostomy dressing. This is going to be more painful than it might have been because of giving the tube an accidental tug earlier in the week. Itās been a pain ever since. Might need my leather belt to bite on.
Looking around the property today and realised how much junk Iāve accumulated over the years. Some of it working but outdated junk. Iām going to gather it all in a central place and pay someone to take the lot away come the new year. I could probably sell some of it but let someone else benefit from that. I canāt be bothered with the hassle. Best and easier for me if it just goes.
Good Morning Forum Friendsā¦
I was just about to write yesterdayās morning post when an old friend dropped by with a Christmas card. He had to stay for the obligatory cup of tea when anyone visits Foxyās gaff, and the usual catch upā¦
Misty and murky again today and I had an early start, the daughter and hubby are coming later for a day out at Dobbies Garden Centre somewhere down the M1.
It was still dark when I left and 6 degrees C, a bit nippy around the legs so plenty of jogging was in order, but I managed to pause and take this photo of a house I pass each morning on my walk. They always make a good show at halloween and Christmas. Quite impressive donāt you think?
I took my camera this morning because the decorations didnāt come out very good on the phone yesterday.
It became light as meandered down the towpath so I managed to get a photo of Foxy doing his roundsā¦
Back in the village I passed by the local church, itās about as near to God as I get these daysā¦āHark the Herald Angelsā will be echoing through the spire laterā¦
Apparently it cost Ā£1000 a day to heat the church and midnight mass will be held in the church hall this year instead of the church.
It doesnāt seem right that God should pay for the energy he suppliesā¦
Sue wanted to put up outside some battery powered Christmas lights that arrived yesterday. I keep a stock of Eneloop pro AA batteries for my photographic gear fully charged up. Sue has greabbed 7 of them for the lights.
I also have a lot of old rechargeable batteries of different makes that have been lying around in a draw for years. So slapped them on the MAHA 8way charger to see if they are any goodā¦ Chucked out 10 old ones already, just got to check the rest. Easily use one good one and individually check the others
Congratulations to your son for the completion of his military service! What was his role in the navy and what are the big plans for the future? With all the concerns of bills and responsibilities, itās exciting to be young and have so many paths from which to choose. I hope he enjoys some time off before launching into something new.
I would give my right arm for homegrown tomatoes about now, Bruce. ! It gets too cold here to grow them this time of year. We typically have a couple of hard freezes during the winter. There is a difference of about 4.5 degrees of latitude between where I live compared to Miami, so times 69 mils, thatās about 310 miles, but itās really because we get hit with regular Canadian cold fronts that rarely hit the southern part of the state.
I had no idea about that connection to Friday the 13th, Rose. Thank you for the link; it sent me down quite a rabbit hole. My lovely, wonderful, perfect (forgive the bias ) niece was born on a Friday the 13th, so itās a happy occurrence 'round here.
Nice! Itās quite an effort, but so worth it.
Those costs are killing our beautiful churches here, OGF. I know your wife enjoys Christmas services. and the stained glass is usually so pretty at night, so I am sorry to read that that the venue has changed. I wonder how God would feel about a lottery to raise a little cash?
I just love that footpath. It is very much like the trail surface I run most days, but without the canal. We are both fortunate to have so many options for eye - and foot - candy!
I took this one early morning a while back; it leads to seven other trails and about 40 total miles of soft asphalt. I was trying to capture a bobcat that had crossed, but he was more interested in finding breakfast so the photo isnāt very exciting, but you get the idea.
Thank your wife for the reminder! I need to order a new set of rechargeables or I am going to need a precription for the angst I have over the battery usage around here!
The staining of the dock is done or, more accurately, I am done with the staining. Todayās excitement is scrubbing the trim and first-level floors. I seem to be having a love affair with all-things ground and floor this week. However, I am ready for a breakup .
On a happy little bit of news, it appears that the pilot around here has had enough of the ground too, and has already accepted another flying job that I believe he will be starting in January. āDistance makes the heart grow fonderā but the second part is always left off: āā¦and it reduces disagreements about what to stream on Netflix.ā So true, so true .
With that, I am off to start the laundry before scooting around the floor for a few hours.
He starts in Darwin working for a private company that he has been working casually for in transition from the navy. They make sea drones and he will be working in the Naval Base in Darwin, he said the only difference will be that he has a different coloured pass and doesnāt have to salute people.
When my father visited from the UK he was really upset about the tomatoes growing from my compost. In England they have to construct greenhouses to grow them, mine were just growing from discarded seeds and ones I didnāt use just just rotted
They just grow outdoors here.
I donāt miss those leafless trees, misty mornings and the sun coming up mid morning, not one tiny bit.
Brilliant photo Surfermom, Iām a softy for mysterious footpath that lead who knows where, itās been the cause of so many long distance runs and walksā¦I could write chapter and verse about some of my adventures, but I sense that all that staining and scrubbing has left you too tired to read the ramblings of an old runnerā¦
Good point Mr Smith, sometimes the non-believers have all the funā¦
@realspeed I had one of those multi chargers that has some sort of battery checker and it kept failing some of my re-chargeable batteries but when I used a different (older and smaller unit) it charged up the failed batteries no bother. Those failed batteries are still in service, and the new fangled charger is in the bin.
It seems to get harder to cope with the dark cold mornings the older I get Bruceā¦I should have moved south when I had the chanceā¦
I love Friday the 13th ! Went to casino today, came home with extra $1265! Also, a hand blown glass snow man from Corning for a Christmas tree!
Never been scared of 13th. Itās the best day as others stay home.
I donāt recall my mother ever growing cherry tomatoes after the first years in the 1970s.; they just grew abundantly from those left behind. My brother said that the best tomatoes and produce he ever ate were from Australia. Other than the occasional nursery, I donāt know anyone who has ever had a greenhouse. We just live and die by whatever the seasons throw our way.
Cherry tomatoes, plum tomatoes we used to grow loads of these during the Summer months, outside on our property, so many that we would make tomato sauce, about 100 bottles and store them for the whole year. My husband was good at taking care of those, all I can manage now is a few tomato pot plants in my yard, just to keep up the tradition a little, and itās a great satisfaction eating freshly-picked homegrown tomatoes, the taste is incomparable to store-bought ones, of course.
My Dad had a greenhouse and grew tomatoes every year, Iāll never forget the unique taste, and with a sprinkle of salt we would eat them like apples. But in those days even shop bought tomatoes that were either grown here or in Guernsey, tasted miles better than they do now. I suppose tomatoes on the vine come anywhere near these days.
The sewage water treatment plant just up the road have tomato plants growing everywhere, apparently the seeds are not broken down in the human digestive system.
WOW. Well done Cherub. Nice lil earner.
Now hes racking the grey matter. Of a yester year on SM.
The similarities of a lady, near or on your patch.
Who used to take her āMotherā, with many years of wisdom.
Who only needed to look at a slot machine and it spilt itself of $$$$$.
I seem to recall. The Mafia banned her.
All da way 2 Tom Bola.
Yes, I used to take my mother to the slots. It wasnāt me posting about it, as I wasnāt a forum user back then.
Too busy working, and keeping my mom happy.
