Food and drink discovered through fiction

Yesterday whilst watching Sweet Magnolias I discovered the delights of mint tea with lemon slices. On the face of it, it’s an unlikely combination. But it does taste and smell lovely. Also apparently very good for you. I also ended up looking up strawberry shortcake whilst watching the same show.

I’ve also discovered several American delicacies whilst re-watching Mad Men this year.
Chefs Salad, iceberg wedge salad with blue cheese dressing. That Cos Cob is a location and not a food. That putting salt on ice cream is a thing. That apple pie with melted cheddar cheese is also a thing.

I also can’t remember which retro British series I was watching on one of the oldies channels, but there was a discussion about a canned tuna pasta recipe. It may have been As Time Goes By. I can’t find the recipe I made but it was something like this :

I cook this sometimes when I’m in a hurry or just want to do an easy spaghetti dish. It’s also good without the tomatoes, just canned tuna, it’s what we call our quick and easy dinner saver .

It’s very convenient and it was delicious! My thanks to Judi Dench for the inspiration - I think it might have been the documentary about her life that I was watching, rather than as Time goes by.

This is a very Italian thing, isn’t it:

spaghetti boiled, drained and tossed in a pan with warm olive oil, parmesan on top! I love it!

Yes, or simply toss drained spaghetti in chopped garlic, chilli pepper (optional) , parsley, which have been previously sautéed in extra vergin olive oil, with a little pasta water to help blending. Other optional you can add are black olives and anchovies, if you like them.

Yes, used to keep a little jar of anchovy fillets in the fridge … chop up a few and add to pasta.

I didn’t know it was possible to be so suddenly hungry despite having had a big dinner. There must be a special stomach compartment for spaghetti smothered in parmesan.

Spaghetti in a lemon garlic butter sauce with parsley & parmesan sprinkles is nice too. The lemon rind zing gives it a wow factor.

Food and drink discovered through fiction … I like fiction, currently watching a Korean soap set in a seaside town with a minor squid industry, every one loves their meals. Mrs d00d’s hooked!!! It’s got me googling Korean eateries in London.

But I rarely see or notice mentions of food/drink in other shows. I do love cookery vids on YT, and I get lots of inspiration there.
