Why are you leaving mate? - I enjoy your posts…
Really didn’t like The Vaccines …too contrived, too formulaic.
A case of 'I’m bored, I know I’ll start a band ’
This thread may just keep me here. It all depends on what happens soon - sorry, can’t say anymore in here but you’ll know if I’m still here tomorrow afternoon if there’s another album posted!
It would be a shame if you leave Floydy whatever your reasons. I have enjoyed this thread so far. I can’t always comment because I don’t always know enough about the albums in question.
I can see that listing 1000 albums can be a bit of a mega task, if that’s bothering you, why not just post your top twenty to finish off.
You will certainly be missed though, whether on this thread or on the other threads.
Don’t worry pal, I’m staying. problem sorted hopefully.
Today I’ll be rounding off the bottom 200 albums. Please stay tuned for further happenings…
No.804: “Born To Play Guitar” by Buddy Guy (2015)
We can virtually count on one finger who, of all those legendary bluesmen we still have left and it looks like Buddy Guy is the final one remaining of the classic blues artists. Guy returned after a long long time in 2015 with this spectacular album featuring old and new blues tracks with an array of famous famous joining him. His guitar is a tour de force throughout, as this live rendition (with B.B. King) of one of the best tracks shows:
Who wanted more Cat Stevens?
No.803: “Tea For The Tillerman” by Cat Stevens (1970)
Anyone know what a “tillerman” is? Answers on a postcard.
Love this album, mainly because it includes one of my all-time favourite songs: Wild World. But we’re not going to play that as it was shown on here from the Majicat live album earlier on. Instead, here’s Father And Son.
No.802: “Purple Electric Violin Concerto” by Ed Alleyne-Johnson (1992)
I can’t remember how I came across this album because this sort of thing wouldn’t normally register with me but here is something rather different from the norm: an entirely instrumental neo-classical album played solo on electric violin. Ed Alleyne-Johnson featured occasionally in New Model Army, an anarcho-political outfit but this is miles away from that kind of stuff. Give this clip a go if you fancy something very beautiful indeed to listen to:
Loved the Buddy and BB track.
Saw BB King and Gary Moore at Wembly
No.801: “Rising Sons featuring Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder” (1966)

A landmark team-up featuring a very young Ry Cooder playing with prowess against one of the greats, Taj Mahal (contrary to my comments in the Buddy Guy piece above, I think he’s still alive too tbh!). This ranks as one of the all-time great blues albums.
Sadly, there are no live recordings of the pair in action, but this still pic does the job adequately enough:

Hi mate.
If you likes that, you’ll love the Taj Mahal track too above
I am jealous as fvck mate. B.B. King was one of the greatest wasn’t he?
He was helped onto the stage by two big heavies and did the whole show sitting down and dancing
They would need to be heavy, wouldn’t they? Bet it was a great show bud:cool:
I remember seeing Bo Diddley in the early 1980’s turn up to a gig in one of those tiny Honda vans. We were waiting in the queue (at Dingwall’s) and they opened up the back of the van and there was Bo Diddley in this huge armchair sitting there with his old box guitar. My daft mate said “Hello, Mr. Diddley!”
Wey hey! Nice to see you Floydy.
I have to say that some of your choices surprise me a bit. Judging by your music, particularly the Prog Rock, I would put you at slightly older than me, whereas you are in fact slightly younger. I think I missed out a bit on bands such as Tull, Floyd, Yes etc.
That’s it for today then, we’re now a fifth of the way through it. Doesn’t take as long as I thought actually and despite the time it takes, I’m enjoying posting the videos and chatting to you about these records and associated happenings. No rush though, and when we get to the top 100, I’ll be looking a little more in depth at those top albums with more info such as band members, chart positions and other historical info. Hope you can all join in
For now though, I’ll leave you with a concise overview of Nos.850-801.

Great stuff sweet guitar from Guy, fave track from Cat Stevens, nice new track for me in Johnson, and to hear the Rising Sons track with Ry Cooder who was persuaded to Join Captain Beefhearts Magic Band and played guitar and did some of the arrangements on Safe As Milk.
I’m only 53 actually, Longdogs. My beginnings in music were around 1978-79, so most of my interest has been looking back at music from before that era, which I have taken an almost fanatical interest in. I began with the ‘new-wave’ scene but I think the progressive rock element was spurred on by my purchase of the first Asia album in 1982 and my subsequent ticket to see them at Wembley Arena. First band I saw live in fact and it all stemmed from there.
Thanks bud. Great to see people are playing the videos and enjoying them as well
I didn’t know Ry Cooder was in Beefheart’s band, but I can see a faint connection there. I have ‘Safe As Milk’ and should dig it out, but I’m not a massive fan of Beefheart to be honest. I can’t really get to grips with music that doesn’t have a proper melodic element to it, free form jazz etc…or am I missing the point? I dunno:confused:
Like you, my beginnings were in 78/79 but I wish I had paid more attention to the earlier stuff. Maybe I was more into commercial music. I have to say though that this thread has renewed my interest in music in general so I might be exploring some of those bands I missed.
You were probably like me then. I would spend my pocket money each week on four singles at 25p each bought from the town market. The top 40 in those days was so varied and I would listen to Paul Burnett’s rundown on a Tuesday lunchtime in between school. Then it was puting my old flip-top mono cassette player next to a transistor radio and taping the top 40 every Sunday (Kid Jenson I believe!). Happy days long gone!
Pleased you’re finding some interest in the thread though, there’s plenty more to come and I’m sure there will be many more surprises too
