Does anyone here have any fish as pets?
Are they easy to care for? I would like to have a small aquarium at home, but I’m not really sure I can take care of them all the time. I know it’s not like having a cat, or a dog who need special care and attention.
I found it high maintenance. It depends on the type of fish as to how much work. Goldfish are messy. You have to clean the aquarium regularly. The aquarium should in theory find a balance of PH that stops the water getting dirty, but it’s not so easy and unless you have a really big aquarium it’s just a lot of work because fish become more messy the bigger they get. With tropical fish you need a heater and they need specific food. You cannot mix some species in case they eat each other! Either way someone needs to come and feed them every day when you are away and you have to leave the aquarium on. You have to empty it every so often, move the fish to a safe holding tank and the original after cleaning and changing gravel then refill and then wait until the PH of the water is ok to return the fish.
I can safely say that I do not have any desire to ever keep fish again.
