Exam results - Lies, damned lies and Statistics

Proportion of As and A*s fall in this year’s A-level results — see the key statistics

The thing is that the proportion of A and A* passes will have been decided months ago and probably before anyone actually sat any exam, and for political reasons (whatever they are).

So this headline and the percentages could have been published ages ago rather than disingenuously implying that it has anything to do with how the students have actually performed.

I got A.B.B.A. but no one would take a chance on me

Were going to see the same sort of headlines when the GCSE results come out next week.

Not being funny, but Scottish schools had their results out on the 9th August. No headlines for them, they just got on with it. :woman_shrugging:

I know. No idea why there’s a time difference in publication dates.

Different school year all round I would imagine. Our schools went back on Tuesday, when do yours go back?

Not sure but early September is the going rate.

The Exam Results for Scotland were reported on and analysed too.

Hi
I never liked exams in summer, terrible hayfever when I was at school.

That was always the case. I think they call it “scaling”. The 11plus was exactly the same eg 10% would go to Grammar Schools 15% to Technical Schools and the rest to Secondary modern. (I made those figures up as a illustration they varied from year to year depending on the places available)

I have no reason to doubt you Bruce. It’s just the dishonesty of reporting the proportions on the same day as the exam results which is a blooming cheek, simce it implies that there was ever a choice about it.
