The chance of any free trade deal between Australia and the EU has just about ended. Last minute talks with the EU collapsed as once again Australia walked away.
Australian producers will keep producing prosecco, feta and parmesan and the EU can go and get stuffed as far as the Australian government is concerned, the EU imposed strict quotas and high tariffs on Australian agricultural imports which negotiators have been trying to remove.
Trade Minister Don Farrell plans to walk away from the talks in Osaka due to an unsatisfactory offer
Well done to the EU negotiators for sticking to their guns
They didnât have the pressure the U.K. did from the Brexiteers to get a deal whatever the cost to try to convince everyone Brexit wasnât a complete flop, which it it is
So they didnât have a fixed time to negotiate by, like the U.K. trying to get ours through in time for the G7
Which led to us sacrificing our sheep and beef farmers interests, animal welfare, food standards and the environment just so the Brexiteers could say they got a deal through
Sorry Bruce, but tough and hard to get is the way to negotiate, not rolling on your back and showing your belly because your so desperate to get a deal
No deal is better for the EU than committing for years to a bad one, itâs the U.K. whoâve been mugs here
The UK-Australia trade deal: âtoo much for far too littleâ
A good thing too.
Australia does not need more âcheaperâ goods being dumped on our shores. Many of our local producers would be driven out of business.
China has tried to flex itâs muscles and many of our produces found other markets. China is coming crawling back. I say, piss off China.
Australia can go it alone and prosper given time.
No shonky deals accepted.
Thatâs the spirit! And for the sake of the environment it makes no sense for Australia to to import and export goods to countries thousands of miles away ?
Every country and trading bloc must look to itâs own best interests, standards, priorities and ethical position
A bad deal is never better than no deal, whatever country is making it
Beware, India are tough negotiators and your government will need to be tough too
In the negotiations with the U.K. they wanted severe restrictions on country of origin rules, more visa for workers and students to come the U.K.
And Rishi had already agreed that there will be no legally enforceable commitments on labor rights or environmental standards, meaning that India will be able to undercut U.K. production cost by continuing to exploit and abuse their workers, using child labour and using polluting production methods
Exactly. The U.K. didnât need cheap meat from Australia here either and it will harm our own farmers
And we didnât insist on protection for the naming rights on UK food and drink like Melton Mowbray pork pies, Scotch whisky, Welsh lamb and Irish cream liqueur so itâs still legal for Australia to impersonate these products.
Well done to the EU for sticking up for their feta, mozzarella, parmesan and prosecco!
Looks like a win-win for both parties to me. No one lost their face. Plus the environment will not be affected with even more cargo ship traffic round the globe.
