During all my drinking years I never once had a Stout

My father died of Cancer when I was 8 & spent many years in & out of hospital. It was the early years of radiation treatment & he had to travel to Cambridge for that. Whilst there, each evening, they were offered a bottle of Guinness or Mackeson etc, as stout was viewed as a way of helping to keep iron levels up. Google suggests pregnant mums were also offered a bottle each evening too.

A glass of red wine keeps me going.

What about imperial stout?

This is very apt, after all the “Supping Years”

I used to enjoy a couple of pints of Porter. Similar to stout but not as bitter, and perhaps slightly lower alcohol content.

I got hooked on stout because it was cheap,Our local brewery made a good one for 10d in the pubs for a pint.Something like the national keg bitter Double Diamond would be 2/6.More than twice the price.

So there was Sue walking down the aisle very slowly all dressed up for the big event . There stood I waiting patiently for her. Eventually I said to her , hurry up they have 4 cases of Stella larger for the price of 3 in the sale

Back in the 40s and 50s my dear old Mum was told by her Doctor to drink Guinness every day which she did. I remember it well because I had to go to the local offy to get it for her. Plus take the empties back to collect the refund. It used to amuse me when she would put the poker into the fire then into the Guinness to warm it up. She lost her husband, my Dad in 1947 and her son, my older brother in 1954. No wonder she would like drink now and then…daily!

As far as Guinness is concerned this stuff is gorgeous!

Strong and full of flavour, less is certainly more. It could just be me but the regular Guinness is a bit anemic by comparison.

Bet you would have done, if you were snowed in and it was the last tipple in the cupboard

On snowy Starudays we used to drive to a local but remote pub - hoping to get snowed in. It had Beamish on tap so that would have been a fine weekend. Never happened.

No doubt about that.
Would drink anything when it came to it.
When I was skint, cheap cask wine, called “2 buck chuck”

I have added a new beer to my stable of go tos. Charlton Draught used to be available on tap at most Australian clubs or pubs along side the state beer (ie XXXX in Queensland, Victoria Bitter down south etc) but on my recent trip the only common beer was Carton Dry which actually wasn’t bad at all.

Now that is a very pleasant & under rated tipple.

The English museum, is also very good too.

I have not seen Castlemaine XXXX in the UK for several years. It was a pleasant drink on a hot summer day. Especially served with a top of lemonade.

Still in my occasional beer days, I don’t recall ever having a stout, even when in Europe. Probably couldn’t have handled the alcohol content anyway!
