If so, do you make original Shepherd’s Pie(Ground beef, corn, seasonings, and butter) or do make the more updated Shepherd’s Pie using the ground up turkey instead? Which one is best? I’m going to make Shepherd’s Pie this weekend and I need some feedback. Ground beef or Ground up turkey?
Shepherds Pie is minced lamb, Cottage pie is minced beef
I had no idea! Was told it’s ground beef, I learn something everyday.![]()
oh yes !!
The Ground Beef version of Shepherds Pie is called Cottage Pie.
Yes I make shepherds pie, using minced lamb, had it yesterday (see my thread in Food & Drink, ‘What’s for lunch today’ ?)
Both taste the same to me, maybe its a covid thing ![]()
lamb in shepherd’s pie is the best. Turkey is deemed healthier but you need so much more to give it flavour.
I went through a phase of making this vegan version, which is absolutely divine and probably more affordable with the price of meat these days
In my household, back in the 60s and 70s, we often had Shepards Pie on the Monday.
Sunday was often roast lamb for lunch.
The left-over roast meat was put through a grinder. That is the original Shepards pie.
Not the beef mince most commonly used today.
I’m going to try Jamie Oliver’s Shepherd’s Pie recipe this weekend. I love all his feedback, I didn’t know people still make it. I know they have Shepherd’s Pie at the market, but it’s not the same. I think anything that is home-made is best!
Yep. That’s how my mother used to make it, with leftover roast lamb.
I have never come across Shepards Pie made like that since I left Tasmania.
Granma used to make it regularly.
The stuff on offer now, I do not ever buy or eat it. Minced raw beef meat for Shepards Pie? Not on your nelly.
Shepherds don’t herd cows.
I remember those old meat grinders - just
I was tempted to get one a few years back.
Is it just me but do we generally have enough leftovers these days to make anything substantial, a genuine question?
Granted, I make stock out of chicken and duck bones plus scraps in the slow cookers.
That gadget is what granny ground the cooked lamb with.
Plenty of leftovers if living alone. I always cook for 4. Ready-made meals for the freezer or what not.
Correct. Which is why it is called a Shepards Pie. Shepards herd sheep.

OK, so now you’ve all tempted me. Shepherds Pie my next dish as soon as colder weather sets in, but I make it with beef, so it’s cottage pie.
Not too keen on the taste of lamb.
Hmm!
Got the feeling there’s going to be a marked increase in pie making activity by forum members during the next few weeks! ![]()

It would be fun to choose a particular day or week (maybe easier) when we would all make our own personal versions and then post pictures! ![]()
