My health board and I are officially at war.
I have decided to seek a second opinion about my cancer recurrence and the lack of treatment some 7 months later.
Spoke to my GP, I say my, this is one at my practice that has proved to be empathetic and seems to get things done rather than telling me its my age and have some pills and fully supports my request.
My health board are not taken with the idea especially as I also insisted that the second opinion comes from another health board.
With that in mind they have suggested I go to Leeds rather than the much nearer Glasgow, spiteful or my best interests at heart?

Ask them why on earth you have to go to Leeds :scream: I’m fairly sure Glasgow hospitals are equipped with the same stuff as Leeds ones. Also ask them if they are wiling to pay/reimburse you for your trip, ie food, hotels, travel etc.

Answering your last point first, oh yes they pay for travel etc.
As for why they want me to travel to Leeds as opposed to Glasgow I have certainly asked but my health board will totally ignore questions they do not like.
I found this out big time when I decided to complain after being left unable to ever swallow solid food because of the arrogance of my consultant who refused to accept it when I told that I could not swallow the water she wanted me to even when she could see it coming out of my nose.

That is horrific! She basically forced you to drink water to prove that you couldn’t swallow it? Jeez, no wonder you complained bitterly. You should have recorded it and gone to the papers with it. :astonished:

Not quite Pixie.
With throat cancer it is important that you continue to swallow if only liquid during your treatment and for quite some time after as if your muscles and there are over 20 of them involved in swallow cease to work then unfortunately that is it, there is no therapy that will restart them. So you are asked to drink a small cup of water in their presence to insure that you can swallow, she thought I was not trying hard enough.

My consultant refused to believe when I said I could not swallow and refused to a endoscopy until 3 months later which showed that my throat was totally closed it was a further four months before I had a nasogastic tube inserted to try and open the throat. By that time it was too late I had lost my ability to swallow.

@ Muddy, Well if they are allready making long term plans they are not
involving us, the public in making these plans , which is what l was
suggesting, my idea is that every 20yrs a national debate involving the

citizens makes plans for the next 20yrs! That way citizens can have a
direct input on what needs doing to improve things?
This will also dilute the input of the politicians / business leaders/ bankers
et al who generally only have their own interests at heart ??
This debate could be on the lines of a referendum l suppose allthough l
know this will not be popular in political circles for obvious reasons !!

Oh heavens, I am so sorry. @MrFraggle67 :hugs:

@MrFraggle67 , Bloody hell Mr F, That is definitely a case of negligence !
I think you should take legal advice and persue this further ??

@Donkeyman I did this all happened 12 years ago.
Complaining is quite an experience because my health boards and I suspect all health boards take it as a personal attack and will pretty much do anything to get you to cancel the complaint the favourite being taking so long to investigate. I found that with my health board complaints department though they prefer to be called the Customer Response and Feedback Team does not actually do any investigation they just bung it to the department which involved who then sit on it for quite a while.

Coincidently I have just had a call from my GP surgery from a doctor about having my medical records changed because they showed that the swallow issue had been caused by surgery which of course was not true. I sent a letter to the practice manager when I became aware that this was on my records, I was led to believe that medical records cannot be changed but a note can be added, this it seems is bulldodo as GP’s have a duty of care and records must be accurate. So they have been changed to radiation as being the cause which is fine.

Ah, but Leeds is the centre of the known universe. :+1:

(Sorry. Just trying to make light of a poor situation.)

@MrFraggle , But did you actually recieve any radiation therapy ??
Bloody hell, 12yrs of treatment and no resolution. yet ??
Have they given you a prognosis yet, surely you are entitled to that!
Good luck, Donkeyman! :+1::+1:

Please do not apologise as I prefer humour and see it everywhere.

Sounds to me that someone might have made a mistake and is trying to cover it up.
You should certainly follow it up. You have every right.

@Donkeyman
I was first diagnosed with throat cancer in 2009 and had three chemo and around 45 radiation treatments and to be honest really suffered with side effects. Treatment ended in 2010.

I was subsequently diagnosed with a recurrence of the cancer in September last year but as yet have not had any treatment.

Sorry if previous post have been confusing.

I’m afraid that both chemotherapy and radiotherapy are unpleasant. One day, perhaps, they’ll come up with some sort of alternative.
I hope you have more success with your pursuits as you deserve to get this sorted out properly.

Not necessarily true as there was a guy who was diagnosed at the same time as me pretty much the same cancer and treatment he could still eat on his third chemo.
We are all different and will all respond to any treatment differently. But you are right there needs to be an alternative to trying to cure cancer by administering two forms of poison.

Well there’s surgery as well, of course. That can be unpleasant too though.
