Do You Think Vitamins Are A Scam?

It’s a fact that B vitamins feed the nerves so I went on that theory and it was true. They feed internal nerves as well as external.

On the bottle of brewers yeast it says to take 3 tablets three time a day but I took more - double that. It does no harm - not brewers yeast. I’d had the twitch - a really strong one for 6 months. After taking brewers yeast it went in 3 weeks…

I think if you think they work for you that`s fine.

I think you should only take vitamin supplements if blood tests have shown your level is low.
I had low vitamin D a few years ago so my doctor suggested that I took daily supplements.
They did the job, but I insisted on annual tests to make sure I didn’t take too much. I
then researched what problems they could cause when I discovered my level reached 80 from 23 & no doctor had advised me that oral vitamin D3 can cause a low magnesium level… but it had.
I raised my magnesium levels by eating more avocados, nuts & spinach & just have 1 vitamin D3 twice a week . At the last check both levels were normal !

Same here Summer.
I like to know from where the D3 has been sourced ( that’s the vitamin that’s supposed to help but it’s not reckoned to be of any use unless combined with Vit K2)
Some are from fish oils but don’t say which fish and I don’t want to absorb anything from anchovies and krill crustacheons .
Others use the lanolin from sheep’s wool .
K2 is mainly sourced from Natto a fermented food .

Sorry …I’m feeling slightly sick already …so not eager to be persuaded to take a supplement of this and the better ones will be costly anyway

I don’t think vitamins are a scam. There is evidence that people who take multivitamins are healthier than those who don’t. However it could be that people who take multivitamins might be more aware of living a healthy life style and the vitamins do nothing.

Personally I take a multivitamin each day as well as a fish oil tablet. The latter was suggested by my doctor as a possible way of staving off arthritis - I do have slight arthritis but it moves about and surprises me, however it is not stopping me doing anything yet. BTW my doctor didn’t say fish oil would cure or stop arthritis but he used the words, “There is some evidence that it is beneficial”. Any port in a storm.

anchovies, why ever not?

Allergy

I don’t think they are a scam…I take Holland & Barretts ABC+ Multivitamins & Minerals and like to think they do their job (as well as me having a fairly healthy diet…give or take the odd cake!)

Ah, I see.

I’ve never had much to do with anchovies, until Jamie recommended using them as a spag bol sauce flavouring. And it works. Some people add Worcs Sauce to minced beef recipes, which is made with anchovies, is OK, but takes over rather.

Hi,
I had been taking a number of vitamins that are suggested and encouraged by Shogrens Association. Some included omega 3, B complex, primrose, and a few others. After getting covid for second time this past January I was given a different vitamin pack to take on a daily to twice a day regimen along with my normally prescribed meds. I this pack was melatonin. After a month or two of consuming this vitamin pack, I noticed that taking them ripped my digestive system to shreds. I removed the melatonin and my digestion improved. I stopped taking all the vitamins and felt better. Perhaps taking vitamins only when you need them help temporarily. I consulted my doctor who explained to me not enough studies have been conducted to determine conclusion about the effects of taking supplemental vitamins. I look for nutrients and vitamins in natural foods and spices.

Hi there.

Welcome to the forum! :slightly_smiling_face:

Glad you found the right solution for you with the vitamins and supplements.

This always make me laugh (or cry) when doctors say there isn’t enough research. There are millions of studies on nutrition and health, including specific nutrient supplementation. Even just for vitamin D alone there are about 360,000 research articles  It’s just that most doctors don’t tend to read that research, as they are focused mainly on pharmaceutical solutions.
