Do you realise that you are "Middle aged" when you reach 40?

At 65 you are a Senior Citizen and “Old” at 70.
I come in between, “Middle Aged” and “Senior Citizen”. So what do I call myself? Well may you ask.
“Seasoned” is the box I fit into. We all must belong in some box.

I am an original “boomer” born in the first half of the last century, also known in the teaching profession as “The Bulge” which swept through the UK school system from 1951(ish)

I thought I was a Baby Boomer but judging by that list posted by @Psmith, I fall into the Generation X group.

I’m going to suggest that health has a big impact.
In my head I was pretty much always ten years younger than I really was. So at fifty my mindset was that I was about forty. Then, at 58, my dog bowled me over, I struck my face onto a stoned drive - smashed my face up and detached one retina. It all got (mostly) fixed. But for over a year I felt ten years older. Infirm, loss of confidence, loss of fitness. Gradually I’ve regained pretty much all that I lost and now I am merely five years younger in my head. So I’m now getting to middle aged.

Never worried about or even thought about my age until after 70 when I realised that I was definitely not as agile as I once was.

As I near 80 getting down on my knees and then up again requires a lot of forethought and planning.

I think middle aged is now over 55 but below 70. Over 70 is a senior citizen. Old isn’t until you are over 80. When I was 40 I felt like a teenager and was incredibly fit and active. It wasn’t at all how I had imagined being 40 when I was actually a teenager in the 80s. In those days 30 was considered over the hill! It’s probably changed because people started to look after themselves and lead healthier lifestyles than past generations.

The average life expectancy in the United States in 2024 is projected to be around 79.25 years, and according to recent data, in Europe around 81.5 years, so 40 would be middle age. Life expectancy varies significantly depending on where you live in the world, with people in wealthier countries generally having a much longer life expectancy compared to those in poorer nations; for example, Japan has one of the highest life expectancies while countries like Chad and Nigeria have much lower ones, sometimes differing by over 30 years.

That’s an interesting figure. In the USA in 2014 it was 78.8years but in 2022 it was 77.4.

In Australia 2014 it was 82.3 in 2022 it was 83,2

In the UK, 2014 - 81.3 but in 2022 - 82

What happened in the USA to make it go backwards? Is it a reflection of health care?

Middle age is really meant to be middle-adulthood. This used to be 40s when people died at 70. The greater the overall life expectancy, the higher the line rises.

The US has, over the years, become a near full Corpocrisy, the healthcare system is more about profit then it is about healthcare. The price of meds are are spiraling out of site. In some areas Physicians are evening charging clients a yearly membership to be part of their practices. Education / healthcare / housing/ food are / should be fundamental human rights, important to the growth / economical health of any society.

We all end up in one  :icon_wink:

not all, we all end up dead, but not in a box.

Did you hear about the loaded hearse travelling slowly up a steep high street, the back door was not securely locked and the casket slid out slipping its way back down the hill, past Costa’s, past Sainsbury’s smashing through the Chemists window, the lid opened, the guy sat up and said “have you got anything to stop me Coffin” :icon_wink:

I find age relative. I will be 87 in a weeks time. When I think back to when I was 40 I would consider myself quite young. My daughter will be 55 in January and though I still consider her as being young I guess she is middle aged.

So you are saying that it wasn’t the cough that carried him off but the coffin they carried him off in?
