Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead: Anne Widdecombe

Another nasty piece of work the world no longer has to put up with :icon_mad:

A character has gone, don’t matter if you agree or disagree with their politics, we may never see the like again.

Hi

She was only nasty if you took her seriously.

I never could, she was an endless source of fun and ridicule for me.

In getting older some people mellow, gain dignity or gravitas, become more considered and achieve balance or a wider perspective. Widdecome took another approach. Shamelessly.

A national treasure. You’ll be missed.

We didn’t agree with you, but that doesn’t matter.

Foxy, is that “Old” left or “New” left?

Politics aside, she knew how to entertain an audience.

I was in stitches watching her on ‘Strictly’, and also several episodes of ‘The Chase’…

I’ve just read something where it says the police are investigating her death.

Really wouldn’t surprise me if she was involved in something sordid - people like her, those who judge what other people do in their personal lives even tho they are not hurting anyone else - usually have some very dark sordid secrets!

I didn’t like her politics and I thought she was a bit of a fruitcake, but she didn’t deserve to be murdered…

Whether people agreed with her politics or not - she was an elderly lady who, it is being reported, was struck on the head and killed, can’t people drop politics for a few minutes and show some respect!

Well said Sheila, I have been appalled by a couple of the callous comments being made here by those who should know better.

…and all those people who committed suicide because of hateful remarks she and others like her made or perpetuated that played a not an insignificant role in how they felt didn’t deserve to die either. THEY have my sympathy, not a hateful bat like her.

While 10/15 years ago we could give the elderly or those who were brought up in oppressive societies some leeway, not now, not when most of the world is connected and has information at their fingertips and especially if they live in a ‘western - self proclaimed - civilised society’.

Could you expand on that please Azz - what did she say that caused some to commit suicide?

In light of the most recent information re her death, I am truly disappointed at the continued vile comments made by people I held in higher regard.

Have. Consequences. !!
Those £ Billions. Flipped the Coin.

She has drawn widespread public condemnation throughout her life for a series of highly controversial statements regarding history, race, and the LGBTQ+ community. Critics, human rights advocates, and political opponents have frequently labeled her remarks as hateful, offensive, and discriminatory.

Slavery and Colonialism Analogies

  • Comparing Brexit to a slave rebellion: In her 2019 maiden speech to the European Parliament, she drew a direct parallel between the UK leaving the European Union and the emancipation of slaves. She stated, “There is a pattern consistent throughout history of oppressed people turning on the oppressors – slaves against their owners, the peasantry against the feudal barons, colonies… against their empires, and that is why Britain is leaving.” Politicians and historians heavily condemned the comments for trivialising the horrors of chattel slavery.

Use of Racially Offensive Language

  • The “Golliwog” controversy: During the 2019 general election campaign, a leaked WhatsApp chat revealed Widdecombe using a racial slur. Commenting on internal party tensions, she wrote, “Yes. I threw all my toys out of the pram. Bears and gollywogs [sic] everywhere!!” She flatly refused to apologise, arguing it was merely an innocent reference to a 1950s children’s toy.

Statements on Homosexuality and Conversion Therapy

  • Suggesting science could “cure” homosexuality: During a 2019 interview on Sky News, she defended gay conversion therapy and stated, *“The fact that we now think it is quite impossible for people to switch sexuality doesn’t mean that science may not yet produce an answer at some stage.”*This sparked immense backlash from LGBTQ+ groups who noted it treated homosexuality like a disease.
  • Voting record against equal rights: Throughout her time as an MP (1987–2010), she voted against lowering the age of consent for gay men, opposed the repeal of Section 28 (which banned the “promotion” of homosexuality in schools), and consistently voted against civil partnerships and equal marriage.

Platforming Extremism

  • Appearing on fringe broadcasts: Research groups like HOPE not hate highlighted that Widdecombe made multiple appearances on the Richie Allen Show. The platform is widely known for hosting Holocaust deniers and promoting antisemitic conspiracy theories.

Views on Women and Social Issues

  • Dismissing the #MeToo movement: Widdecombe has dismissed major components of the #MeToo movement as “trivial whinging,” claiming that women looking for grievances over minor, historical workplace discomforts were losing their sense of proportion and humour.
  • Shackling pregnant prisoners: As a Home Office minister in the 1990s, she aggressively defended the policy of chaining pregnant prison inmates while they were in hospital giving birth, a stance that drew fierce condemnation from human rights organisations.

Whilst those comments may have been offensive - they would not have caused anyone to commit suicide.

Indeed, Sheila - are we now justifying the murder of anyone with whom we do not agree?
