Thanks Cookiecat :-). i stayed the same for the last two weeks so was pleased when I lost this last week as it gets hard when you’re doing everything right and you’re weight stays the same each week, very disheartening, but you just have to keep on with it and it will pay off after a time.
I learned early in this dieting lark to not just look at the scale but use a tape measure. Honestly you can lose inches and it won’t show on the scale. The scales can make you miserable because of lack of bowl movement, water retention many many things. So get measuring your slimming waist.
A very interesting topic. I have read every post. I will be starting my Diet tomorrow, just sensible eating , I dont use sugar but I need to cut out the bread, i will be eating plenty of meat and veg also eggs and salads,
I will still be having my porridge oats for breakfast as my doctor says they are very good for my cholestrol.
cookiecate.
in your post 25 you say drink 64 fluid ounces per day. then in your post 28 you say drink 8 fluid ounces per day.
can you please clarify , because I do drink a lot of water each day.
8 FL is just less than half a pint.
Sorry Kathleen that is a huge error, thank you so much for reading everything. I apologise for going on and on about Atkins but it works for me so I do go on a bit.
You should drink at least 64fl Oz of water and that should read that you should drink 8 x 8 fl oz glasses of water each day.
Sorry again and good luck with the weight loss.
Good to see you Kathleen, hope you enjoy your healthy eating. Bread has always been my big problem, I love it and used to eat too much, telling myself that wholemeal was really healthy.
I am interested in the atkins diet but I will have to speak to my doctor first about it, fingers crossed.
your heading for a thump again
Don;t be too surprised if your doctor isn’;t too impressed with Atkins but I will certainly keep everything crossed. Good luck in your journey to slimness Kathleen.
My mum told me that no body loves a fat girl but oh how a fat girl can love. Here is a cheer for all fat bottomed girls and boys.
I used to hate that song coming on at discos when I was younger as I had a fat bottom and it used to make me feel embarrassed.
By the way I am still a great believer of having enough fibre, I have 2 or 3 slices of wholemeal bread a day.
Fine if that is what you feel you need. Me, I eat cashew nuts, peanuts and walnuts.
I don’t remember that song I think I must too old. I think men secretly love big bottomed girls.
There are big bottoms and then there are big bottoms!!!
Yes indeed, some of them bottoms should never be seen in jeans or tight leggings. One day we were driving along and my husband said that the woman walking on the pavement looked as if she had two ferrets having a fight in her trousers.
The problem with doctors is that their training doesn’t devote sufficient time for a proper understanding of nutrition.
As we are all here over 50 we can all remember that when we were children there were far fewer seriously obese people.
The explosion in obesity and overweight has come about within our lifetimes and can be dated to the change in dietary advice that occurred around 1980s when traditional fats like butter, lard and dripping became unjustly demonized and we started the low fat diet fad was promoted.
The latest research shows how the secretion of the hormones that tell our brains we are full and not hungry are activated by the passage of fat as it travels through the digestive system. In order for the message to get to the brain that we have consumed sufficient relies on FAT.
We would consider crazy anyone who suggested that taking the brakes off your car and relying on will power and self discipline to control your speed was a good idea.
Removing the brakes on appetite by reducing fat consumption is just as daft.
There is an excellent video online called
http://i3.ytimg.com/vi/FSeSTq-N4U4/default.jpgThe Food Revolution - AHS 2011 - YouTube that explains how in Sweden they are losing weight by eating more butter but less bread.
Thanks Ted that is just amazing it all clicks into place and eating fat makes even more sense. Thank you for sharing this very important information which is difficult for older people to swallow but as you say we have seen times when people were not so fat.
That is why I do not use all those ‘low fat’ spreads and stuff, we all need fat in our diets. Not too much though, just everything in moderation!
My late husband had to go on a very low fat diet due to gallstones. It is amazing how you can cook without adding fat when you turn your mind to it. Glad to say the diet worked and he didn’t need an op.!
Ted when I was a child there were few obese people because we had just come through a war with rationing and food shortages. People ate what they could get which wasn’t much if you lived in a town, county people fared better . I understand the population was never healthier.
Going back many years I don’t think there was an obesity problem among the general population . I understand few r people other than wealthy landowners could afford to eat meat regularly, they ate mainly vegetable/grains/bread/ the occasional rabbit.
If you go back even further to our hunter gatherer ancestors they existed on anything they could find, wild grains/fruit/birds eggs /fish/ meat /wild honey even.
It seems common sense to me that the ideal diet is along these lines, fresh natural unprocessed food.
So I would say the ‘weigh explosion’ is caused by people eating altogether too much food and possibly much of it highly processed.
I agree we need ‘fats’ and I have continued to eat butter refusing to eat processed ‘spreads’ and margarine which tastes to me like Vaseline, I would prefer to eat nothing at all. Likewise so called ‘sugar free’ foods which are frequently sweetened with aspartame which I would class along with poison.
Common sense tells me humans were ‘designed’ to eat a variety of foods preferable as natural and unprocessed as possible and to eat all food in moderation. That way they won’t become obese neither will they need fad diet created by people intent on making money.
