Deep Fried Mars Bars, are they still being sold?

I am not sure if they were all the rage.
Have you ever eaten one?

I think they eat them in parts of Scotland. I thought they were a Glasgow delicacy.

Glasgow? A fair and common mistake, given the reputation that Glasgow has for healthy eating (and drinking).
Nope. The deep fried Mars bar was invented in a north east town called Stonehaven, to be precise in the Carron fish bar. Back around 1985 (when the shop was called The Haven). The shop sold sweets and soft drinks as well as the usual deep fried menu - fish, deep fried haggis, deep fried white pudding and of course deep fried pizza. Curry sauce being optional. Some of the guys manning front of house (is there a back of house in a fish&chip shop?) were bored one evening. So they tried each of the confectionary on offer to see which worked best battered and fried. None of Bounty, Twix, Marathon (not yet Snickers), Topic, etc worked as well as the mouth searing Mars bar. And a delicacy was born.

Stonehaven was also the home of the inventor of the pneumatic tyre (not Dunlop), Lewis Grassic Gibbons and Lord Reith of Stonehaven (of BBC fame). And me.

I just checked their online menu (what about those two words that don’t set well with a chip shop?) I can confirm that the deep fried mars bar is still on the menu - £3 each.
As an aside, how come you knew the chippie in Stonehaven? My excuse is that I grew up there.

My mother’s family lived in that area. Inverbervie was one of the towns there.

Here in the states, I don’t think we ever heard of them!

Alternatively, you can roll them in pastry and air fry.

I’ve been watching American TV on Netflix recently, couldn’t help but notice you guys like sitting round a fire burning marshmallows on a stick, like it’s religion. Whatever makes you happy.

I’d never thought of that, I’m going to have to give it a try!
I’m wondering if these might be an alternative, tasty with the nuts and a bit less gooey.

I was going to say yuk … but … :face_with_hand_over_mouth: … that sounds kinda quirky.
Is it nice? What type of pastry?

A sheet of puff pastry according to what I’ve gleaned from Google, glazed with egg.

Okay!
I’m up for it, I’ll even throw in some pictures of me being violently sick!
Nah… seriously, I just need to get some puff pastry, probably tomorrow when I’m in town.
The rest will follow…
