Covid: France to drastically restrict travel from UK

The government said that from Saturday all non-residents would have to give a compelling reason for travelling to France.

All arrivals would have to provide a negative Covid test less than 24 hours old and isolate for at least two days.

Confirmed Omicron cases are currently much higher in the UK than in France.

The UK recorded 78,610 new Covid cases on Wednesday - the highest daily number reported since the start of the pandemic.

Slightly more than 10,000 have been confirmed as Omicron, but it is thought that about twice that number are cases of the new variant.

France reported 65,713 new Covid cases over a similar period but has only 240 confirmed cases of Omicron.

French government spokesman Gabriel Attal said the new measures were ā€œeven more drastic than what is currently in placeā€.

From Saturday, anyone coming from the UK will be required to have tested negative by PCR or antigen test less than 24 hours before their arrival in France.

Once in France they will be expected to self-isolate for a week, unless they have a second negative test, in which case they can end their quarantine after just 48 hours.

These restrictions currently only apply to arrivals who are not fully vaccinated.

Non-residents will need compelling reasons for entry, which include family visits - but not tourism or non-urgent work.

However, UK Transport Minister Grant Shapps said hauliers would be exempt from the new restrictions.

Harsh, but fair.

Hi

There have always been exemptions, another one is medical staff.

Presumably the illegal immigrants will continue to enter France, as normal!

ā€¦ ā€¦ and waved straight through for waiting boats to carry them across the channel to our shores. Upon arrival theyā€™ll be greeted by the bleeding heart brigade whilst being handed their free NHS number + phone and prolly an accommodation addy too :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

France regularly break these rules. They did it with the vaccines.

You canā€™t trust Macron, desperate short men get radical very quickly when backed into a corner.

Macron will do as much as possible to keep the Brits out!

Yup, you canā€™t blame them for trying to keep Omicron out.

I didnā€™t realise we had so many more cases, thatā€™s bad, how come?

France can do nothing right in the UKā€™s eyes. He would have been lashed at the pole if he allowed entry to his country.
Heā€™s taking the right steps for his own country. Protecting others is a part of his job.

AFAIK, the Omicron variant is highly infectious and itā€™s being spread by unrestricted contact, particularly among the younger age groups, in urban environments.

Like doing the negatives on the effectiveness of vaccine?

How many didnā€™t get vaxed, as a result of what he said?

A job that he prolly wont have for much longeršŸ˜ˆ

My point was previously stated, Tedc, when I said no matter what he does he will be lashed at the pole. This is a positive step, and yet brits wonā€™t acknowledge it. So sad.

We might be but so is France. According to this article there are already thousands of French people infected. And what about travellers from other parts of Europe and the EU?

Confirmed Omicron cases are currently much higher in the UK than in France.

French citizens, their partners and children, legal residents, and EU citizens travelling home through France, wonā€™t need an essential reason to travel - but must still abide by all other rules.

Just saying !
Donkeyman! :+1::roll_eyes::roll_eyes::+1:

I donā€™t know why we have anything to do with France. This morning they escorted another boat load of migrants into British waters and left them. What happened to the Ā£50million plus we gave them to help sort this out?

They donā€™t want us over there now and theyā€™re pushing all the boat people over to us as well. :triumph:

Work on it, Donkeyman. Iā€™m sure youā€™ll come up with something given more time. :+1:
